8GB RAM Module Compatible with ASUS X551MAV-EB01-B?

As the title suggests, is it possible to upgrade the RAM in the ASUS X551MAV-EB01-B from 4GB to 8GB? I have searched the internet for an answer to this question, but the ones I found seem to contradict each other. I will list the places I found my info below in separate sections.

Specs: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/X551MAV/specifications/  (Notice how ASUS doesn't mention a 4GB RAM Max capacity anywhere on the spec sheet)

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/X551MAV/specifications/ (This does state the 4GB limit, but it also has different yet similar specs for having the same model #)

Cannot Upgrade RAM:

  1. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231876 (Under Specs)
  2. http://www.microcenter.com/product/438199/x551mav-eb01-b_156_laptop_computer_-_black (Under Specs)
  3. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/ASUS/x551mav
  4. https://www.amazon.com/forum/-/Tx3ELV5XYE4JVPY/ref=ask_ql_ql_al_hza?asin=B00SV72ZA2 (This is the Asus X551MAV-EB01-B(S), but it looks the same and has the same specs as the non-S varient)
  5. https://www.amazon.com/does-support-upgrade-8GB-RAM/forum/Fx2GPKOZFEQDRKU/Tx3VFXJDMF4FL58/1?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B00SV72ZA2 (Same note as 4)

Can Upgrade RAM:

  1. https://www.amazon.com/Asus-X551MAV-EB01-B-15-6-Inch-Dual-Core-Processor/product-reviews/B00SV72ZA2/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_search_rgt?filterByKeyword=8gb&search-alias=community-reviews#reviews-filter-bar (Some claim to have upgraded; this is the Asus X551MAV-EB01-B(S), but it looks the same and has the same specs as the non-S varient)

  2. https://www.amazon.com/15-6-inch-Celeron-2-16GHz-Processor-Windows/product-reviews/B00L49X8E6/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_search_rgt?filterByKeyword=8GB&search-alias=community-reviews#reviews-filter-bar (Some claim to have upgraded; some of the specs on this listing are incorrect)

  3. https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Computers-Accessories/8GB-memory-Asus-X551MAV-EB01-B-DDR3-DIMM-1600MHz/B01LTD7CVQ (Claims to be an upgrade, but it looks shady)

Thoughts? Have any of you owned and/or successfully upgraded the RAM on an ASUS X551MAV-EB01-B? Is so, I would appreciate any help and pointers as to what memory modules are compatible!

UPDATE:

I was able to find a local guy on Craigslist who gave me a deal on a 16GB Kit (2x8GB) of DDR3L RAM for $60. He let me test the RAM to make sure it worked with my system before money changed hands. I can now confirm that the ASUS X551MAV-EB01-B can support 8GB of RAM or, at the very least, that it can support the specific 8GB RAM module I have inside the laptop. I also did an hour stress test in Prime 95 (I didn't have any free flash drives or a DVD drive in my laptop for MemTest86). Pics below:

I would suggest looking up the processor specifications on intel ark website, and looking for a tear down or service manual to check the physical hardware inside the machine. If you already own it, you could just take apart though.

Update: The intel page states that the processor supports 8gb of memory.

I did check Intel's site and it says that the Celeron N2830 supports a max of 8GB (https://ark.intel.com/products/81071/Intel-Celeron-Processor-N2830-1M-Cache-up-to-2_41-GHz). I also already took apart the machine several times for the SSD upgrade I did, thermal paste replacement, and of course to check the RAM slot (it only has 1). One of the reasons I ask this question is because I don't know whether or not the motherboard can support an 8GB stick. I had a similar experience with my Scrapyard Wars inspired HTPC build (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/reftyuy/saved/h7YbvK). I used a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Biostar G31 M7. While the Q6600 supported up to DDR3 memory, the Biostar mobo could only support up to 4GB of DDR2. This was not a problem as I knew beforehand what each component supported, but I do not have the same luxury this time around. While I know that the N2830 can support up to 8GB of RAM, I don't know how much the mobo can support. I thus decided to ask the community to see if anybody had done or at least tried to do the same upgrade that I want to do.

Yeah, fair enough. I have upgraded a couple of laptop ram modules from 4GB to 8GB sticks before. I have sucessfully upgraded a HP Folio 13 1016tu from 1x4gb to 1x8gb. However HP specified that was possible. Do you know anyone who you could borrow a ram stick from to check?

The processor was released in 2014. Based off that alone I would say it is highly likely that the 8gb stick is compatible. My HP folio was a 2011 machine, and that accepted 8gb fine. Although that processor supported 16gb of memory.

Comparing the product page for your celeron and my i3 shows that the i3 supports 16gb of dual channel memory and the celeron 8gb of dual channel memory. Based off this I would say your laptop is unlikely to accept the 8gb stick. Unless you can find someone who has had success with it or asus customer support/ borrow a ram stick, I would leave your money in the bank.

Okay, thanks for sharing your experience and giving me some advice!

Thats allright.

The best thing you could do for that pc might actually be reinstalling windows.

SERIOUSLY?! You were able to upgrade to 8GB?! Dude, this is awesome news! I thought my wife's laptop capped out at 4GB because that is what most websites mention. However, the proof is in the pudding with your experience and screenshots. I am going to visit BestBuy and ask them to test an 8GB RAM and see if it works. I am sure they have loose RAM cards for me to test. I fit works, I am definitely buying it since I already upgraded her hard drive to a Samsung SSD. Installed OS is Elementary OS.
