Ryzen Turbo Voltage and AMD Voltage Confusion

So if AMD says that you should stay below 1.45v for any overclocks and below 1.40v for longevity, then why does stock voltage go in the 1.462-1.5v range for me on my 1700X? Everything is set to default or auto so i have not overclocked.

it's the XFR, extended frequency range. for some reason it picks high voltages for the turbo clocks. i would just overclock manually (which disables XFR)

I will eventually, but i'm just curious as to why amd tells us to use lower voltages when stock voltages are higher technically.

I had the same problem on my 1600X, where voltages would push as high as 1.48v sometimes. At stock, I just run a hefty manual undervolt (doesn't affect XFR performance), but I'm overclocked now so it doesn't matter anyway.

 

Pretty much, just don't rely on auto voltage.

It is normal, the voltages are fine for short periods, although an extreme cooling solution would be required to sustain it long term.

The highest I recall seeing on my R7 1700 was 1.52V. Although overclocked I just keep it at a steady 1.325V @3.8GHz.

 

Do you have a source of the "AMD says" reference?

Well on youtube lots of hardware reviewers are saying AMD recommends about 1.38v for long term and no more than 1.45v for overclocking.

 

So then the XFR voltages above 1.45v are normal then? Ok good, just making sure.

There are a wide range of "AMD says" claims by various sources with inconsistent figures given.
1.3-1.38V would be recommended it is an optimum power efficient range for the CPU, and above this the power draw increases dramatically while the performance and stable clock speeds have minimum improvement.

1.45V would be recommended as a "maximum" for overclocking as most people would not be able to maintain stable safe temperatures above this voltage under 24/7 load without an extreme cooling solution.

I bought and built a ryzen 1700 build with an asus prime x370-a mb and the darn thing keeps crashing under any load, cinebench and tried doom. crashes sometimes blue screen and most of the time just resets with no warning. its always on 2.94 or 3.15ghz never above. I need help badly. about to go back to the furnace of my fx 8350. FYI voltage is alwats 1.4 or .3 All settings in mobo are stock except ram is set to 1.35 because its normal voltage.

Welcome to the forums, that is the first I have heard of Ryzen giving a blue screen, hopefully there are some debug crash dumps to go with it.

I recommend that you create your own thread asking for help rather than hijacking someone else's.

Download hwinfo or similar and check your CPU temperatures. Also check for a folder "C:\Windows\Minidump".
