i7 950 to skylake or kabylake, gigabyte or asus

I have an i7 950 in my computer right now and I'm trying to find a new mobo and CPU set up. I have the ram already (Corsair 2x8 vengeance led white) but I constantly keep changing my mind on what CPU and mobo I should get. I sat down with my dad and we said I should get the Gigabyte aorus 7, but today I found the Asus TUF mark 1. My dad also said I should get an i7 7700 because of future-proofing but Linus keeps saying I should get an i5 for gaming (i like messing around with the BO3 mod tools if that would affect anything for the CPU). I kinda want to go all out if I'm getting a 7700 and get the k variant but I have never overclocked before. thanks for helping out!

Linus is wrong. An i5 is NOT all you need for gaming because newer games can use 8 threads. The 7700 with a B250 board is a much better option than a 7600K with a Z270 board

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Don't get any i5, they are getting obsolete so quickly its laughable.  I would actually wait for the 8th gen CPU's from intel, they will be  running 6 cores across the board - even the i5 8400 is rumored to have 6c/6t and it will likely cost around 150ish

Oops, forgot i5's don't have HT

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Isnt Intel releasing the 8700k in a couple months or Q3 2017? i7 950 is still a good chip for gaming and i I were you I'd just hold off till the Coffee Lake release.

Overclocking will not add enough performance to justify the high cost, get a b250+ i7 7700(stock cooler) and be happy.

Yeah, if the OP wants to consider Ryzen. The 1600 is a better option than the 7700 IMHO :)

I'm certain that only the flagship i7 will feature 12 threads. the i5 8400 will feature 6 threads?

if I were you, I would go to ebay and pick uop an Intel Xeon X5670 for $30. These CPUs run at 2.93GHz and can be very easily overclocked. After doing some OCing you will have skylake i5 performance and modern day i7 multithreaded performance for dirt cheap.

Oh yeah, forgot OP has an X58 board (facepalm)  A cheap Xeon would be a nice boost and if OP still wants an upgrade 8th gen or X99 is a better choice anyways

your dad is right, get a 7700k and z270 if you can. Even the 7600k struggles in games like battefield 1. If you dont want to overclock, then just get the regular 7700 and a H270 board.

Pretty much this. 2600k is slighty faster than the 7600k. Linus is wrong is op.

Your mobo would be perfect for a 6 core 12 thread Xeon like my x5680. Take a look at some of my posts and threads to get an idea of the performance.

If you're dead set on Intel, don't buy last generation (Skylake) unless it's a super deal. If you have the budget, get the 7700k. Asus makes overclocking stupid easy with their oc tuner.

I won't straight out say more cores are better, generally the more cores you have, the more heat they put out to achieve higher clock speeds (6 at 4.5ghz would be hotter than 4 at 5.0ghz).

In a lot of today's titles 4 cores is plenty. Anything using older game engines will only use 1 or 2 cores.
