Lower fps on lower graphics?

OopsThatIsMine

Does anyone have any idea why when I lower the graphics settings on CS:GO my FPS drops?

its called the solar system because our sun is called sol

Your CPU could be bottlenecking the GPU at those low settings/resolutions?

Is it running in Crossfire?

On higher settings, your graphics card is being stressed. On low settings, your CPU is being stressed. Your graphics card is significantly newer than your CPU, so it would be best to play on medium to high settings. Whichever gives you more FPS.

Well you can still crossfire APU and GPU, but it seems like you haven't which is good, it could cause that issue if you did. Anyways I'm stumped.

That wouldn't cause the FPS to drop though.

If your gpu can't match up with your cpu it very well could be bottleknecking

Let's back up.

I'm trying to figure out why lowering the graphics quality lowers FPS and that it's due to bottlenecking. If this was a CPU bottlenecking issue, then the FPS wouldn't increase on higher quality settings.

Because the Source engine makes literally no sense.

That's the only answer I've ever been able to extrapolate when I see these, and I've seen it personally in TF2, too. Running at 640x480, DirectX 8 and everything at low hurts the framerate worse than when I run at 1920x1080, DX9 and basically everything maxed out with 4x MSAA.

But that's not a bottleneck like everyone is saying. It's an issue with how the game was developed.

There's no real answer as to why your game isn't running well, primarily because the Source engine is very strange in this sense. Your CPU can shovel its way through CS at 120+ FPS if the GPU isn't an issue.

It puts more load on the CPU than the GPU.

My stuff:

Spoiler

CPU :  Intel i5 8400 | GPU : MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

RAM : 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 3600MHz

Mouse : Logitech G502 HERO SE | Keyboard : Mountain Everest Max w/ Cherry MX Brown

Headset : Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro 250Ω w/ AT2020USB+

Monitor : Acer XF240H @  144Hz

That's not how it works. Unless certain settings are enabled (which, in the context of CS:GO, would only be the multicore rendering), the CPU load will roughly be the same no matter what settings are used.

The issue at hand here is down to just how quirky the Source engine can be.

But how does lowering the graphical quality cause performance to be worse than when the graphical quality settings are turned up? e.g., I turn everything low, I get 50 FPS. I turn everything on high, I get 100 FPS. How does this make sense?

Not enough stress on the gpu can cause it to clock down

enable whatever amds prefer max performance option is in there control panel

AMD (and proud) r7 1700 4ghz-

also (1600)

asus rog crosshairs vi hero x370-

MSI 980ti G6 1506mhz slix2 -

While I have seen this happen, I find it hard to believe this is what's happening. The CPU is still sending at the minimum, the same amount of "jobs" to do.

Or if we were to put this in more concrete terms, let's say the CPU can send at most 100 jobs per second. The GPU is going to render those 100 jobs whether or not it downclocks. The GPU is a slave to the CPU. It's going to work until it can't.

What the above implies is that the CPU is sending less jobs on low graphics quality than on high.
