ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Extreme Announced

ASUS had just announced the ROG Crosshair VI Extreme -- a new addition to the Crosshair group of product(s) for socket AM4. According to sources, the motherboard will be available for North America (to start) by the early August. It will have an MSRP of $349 USD.

 

The motherboard will have controllable RGB lighting on the PCI-Express retention mechanism, by the rear I/O cover + heatsink, on the ROG logo for the PCH heatsink, and on the motherboard. Of course, it will also come with reinforced PCI-Express X16 slots, support for USB 3.1 Gen2, dual M.2 expansion slots. What stands out just as much is the 'ProCool' 90-degree rotated 24-pin power connector.

The motherboard has 12. Twelve. 4-pin fan / water pump headers.

Not only that, a Bitspower monoblock is on the way that will be sold separately.

There is not much details about the VRM design on the motherboard, but given how it looks, it is very similar to the 12-phase VRM found on the Crosshair VI Hero.

Personally, it looks a bit too much like the Crosshair VI Hero at first glance; usually ASUS' Extreme boards are best-of-the-best, and one can easily tell.

The 90-degree rotation for the 24-pin power connector is definitely something nice to see!

Not only is there a AURA RGB header and AURA Sync, there is also an AURA SDK available for the public to download

And...to top it off, full ROG backplate.

 

Another source mentioned about a dual BIOS feature, but I am unable to confirm this -- USB BIOS Flashback AND dual BIOS chips?! Heck yes!

Cool. If I ever win the lottery or something, I'm definitely getting a Ryzen system with a Crosshair motherboard (and probably a Strix GPU). Those components are sexy AF.

money grab in my opinion , not sure how this is going to improve OC ability on ryzen cpus since they all seem to get to 4-4.1 max

dual m.2 is nice, but otherwise it just seems the same

Indeed, I wish more manufacturers would do that.  In this day and age of cable management behind the MoBo, 90º angled power connectors just make sense.

Meh. Right now the AM3 mounting points of the current X370 are far more useful than RGB everything or 12 fan controllers.

Currently have the am3+ version with a 9590. Very nice and stable board. Outside of a few ram quirks, which might be the 9590, I've really liked the product. Especially with the gem water block ekwb made. 

 

That said, not going to pay 350$ for this new one. Don't care for rgb. But I'll admit that 12 fan headers are pretty dope.

i think what happened was asus was a little hesitant in releasing am4 boards and was like oh shit, lets rebrand and tweak a couple things, note this is the THIRD iteration of the x370 crosshair being the hero, hero ac, extreme like wtf

Yeah, I don't see much point in this board. Barely anything extra on it, and costs quite a bit more.

I agree, there doesn't seem to be much more mind-blowing extra features on the motherboard compared to the Crosshair VI Hero. IMO, they probably could have named it as the Crosshair VI Formula, and roll out a more feature rich board with the 'Extreme' tier.

I've got the 990FX Crosshair V Formula (older, non-Z) paired with my FX-8350; absolutely no complaints about it. ASUS' UEFI is much more well refined compared to Gigabyte or MSi -- that the little extra can either make it, or break it.

 

I've used the AM3 version, 890FX Crosshair IV Formula, with a Phenom II X4 955 and X6 1090T as well!

 

 

With all that said, if ASUS is confident enough to roll out a ~$400 premium motherboard for AM4, it is safe to say Ryzen is doing well in the market.

It's a neat new top tier mobo with some extras. Pricey yes but nice one.

I mean isn't that the same for all motherboards of this price on mainstream desktop platform? Yeah they don't make sense to buy them when you think of what you get for that money but people still buy then none the less and there is a market for it otherwise they wouldn't make it.

obviously for NEW builders they might buy it, but it doesnt really have many more features compared to the crosshair 6 (and the ac version) besides the extra m.2 slot.

Tell that to my friend who has been building computers for 5 years and always opts for asus motherboards that are like 300 plus bucks with the built in wifi. He knows it doesn't make sense but he just likes having "the best".

if you see my spec youll see i have the crosshair 6 hero, then they release it with wifi (ac version) built in(you can add it as it has the wifi card slot), but the extreme doesnt really seem to benefit, maybe better power phase but ryzen is already limited to what oc you can get

People will still buy the more expensive board because it's the best. It's the same with the titan x. People know the ti version makes more sense but buy the titan because they can.

I would have bought it if it was out when I got my crosshair, I spent close to that combined with their wifi card I put in (did not use the onboard option) I mean they put a wifi option in but don't offer the parts to install?
