willsamuels

in the zombie apocalypse would it be possible to get the internet or cell phone working at all

i was thinking yes by the way i do want actual info because im writing a zombie book

and im doing some research on tech because i want the book to seem normal so want tech to work

so the twist is that you dont know that the people are in the zombie apocalypse

My guess would be that as long as the people operating/maintaining power lines and things like that don't turn into zombies, then yes, everything would still operate as normal..but they would probably abandon their posts/jobs to be with their families...

Everything comes at a cost, so I don't really see how you would really be able to pay your monthly bills in a zombie apocalypse. Everything that operates using electricity also needs power. I believe there is some automation in terms of generating stations, but I'm also pretty sure they do require some sort of maintenance/supervision from actual people. Electricity and the Internet would be the least of my concerns in an apocalypse, though.

if you could charge your phone yes you could, the systems would still keep working there's no reason for them to stop, and the satellites would still charge themselves through solar panels, eventually though they might break but you'd get probably 110 years min before that happens. internet probably not though as the internet's servers would need power which might not be being produced because people would be more intrested in surviving than keeping the power on so you can look at porn on a lonely night when all your friends are dead.

phone companies might make it free to use all services as they see there's no point not, they are about to die and having some communication with people would be handy

Probably. I mean, I honestly hope some dude operating the phone lines would be nice enough to allow that lol

yes and no to this, internet no, there's no real poi tit won't be viable to keep it going, but keeping your phone going would be and it would also be helpful, as it gives you reliable long range communications, between cars as well as silent ones, texts. so phones would be really helpful, but internet at the beginning no, later on though maybe when you have made a secure settlement as then you could use it to research how to make bullets weapons etc. or other useful things like fixing cars, or setting up security systems to detect incoming zombies using old PCs etc. so yea

Good points. Hadn't really thought of those. Food, water, shelter, and supplies would still be way higher on my list of priorities, though.

Phones...yeah. They would be pretty helpful. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to split up, but you could use your phones if you do.

As for the Internet...I hadn't really thought of it as a source of information, but more of a luxury. It could come in to be really valuable...but by the time you have made a secure settlement in the zombie apocalypse, my guess is that a lot of the major sites and things like that would be down due to the lack of maintenance (or, maybe...the people who take care of the servers haven't turned into zombies?). But yeah, that's a pretty good point.

Just so you know, Cell phones work off of terrestrial Cell Radio towers. Satellites may well be involved in communication over continents, etc, but if the local cell tower loses power, your smartphone loses signal.

fuck so they do. I misremembered that one. Meh they wouldn't be too hard to get back up and running though if you get a generator, so yea meh

Sure but now you need a generator and fuel. Cell towers don't cover much area - generally a few dozens KM. That cell tower then has either a ground connection or an uplink, so you'd have to maintain the infrastructure.

You could design a totally new communication system using individual towers that are self sufficient, but you're inventing something new in this context, not using existing setups.

Satellite phones, Ham and CB Radio, etc, these are the infrastructures that a post-apocalyptic society would fall back on.

Yeah, Ham Radios used in a network fashion.

There are techniques to even show GPS, text, image, and slow-scan television across radios.

Here an interesting tid bit, anyone with Technician license and up can contact the amateur station on the International Space Station (highly doubt zombies get up there).

Awesome! I finally found a use for this (short wave radio), although I'm not sure who would respond. Not a zombie. I've heard that they have short attention spans, and prefer texting.

A friend of mine was going to recycle it because it was "broken", but knowing my love of all things tech he asked if I wanted it. I've never used one, but troubleshot it, found the problem (bad diode) and repaired it. He didn't want it back, so I'm stuck with it, lol. Has some fairly high quality dials and switches, so....

Best Excuses:

#1(simple) "Well, I never liked that stupid thing anyway!"

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."

It depends on the type of radio. After all, wifi and FM radio both use radio waves to transmit data.

Modern FM radios can use a carrier wave to send info like artist and song name and channel name. Obviously the radio needs to be designed to interpret that data.

Yep, amateur radio covers a wide range.  A lot of neat stuff in that hobby.  Still studying about it.  I plan to build a computer specifically for my ham station once I get my license.

Major reason I got interested in radios: the military has a similar system (using radios as a form of network: text, VoIP, video).  Pretty neat stuff.  I would talk more about some of the neat stuff I seen with radios, but that with systems I can't talk about.

Well technically... While zombies, the kind we see in movies and games are most likely impossible right now, there are parasites out there that can "take over" a host, like the one in The Last of Us, it's a real fungus.

All it needs is a crazy person to make a new and improved version of it, to make it infect humans. But then again, more than likely will not happen in our lifetime... hopefully anyway.

Ah, that lovely fungus.  :P   Let not forget the parasites that make mice go towards cats.  Also, if I remember right there is another parasite that targets bugs and make them go up to a high point and be eaten by birds (can't remember the name).
