Ryzen 1600 or 1600x

Hi, 

Im building my first pc and i want to know which one is worth my money: the 1600 or the 1600x.

1600 comes with cooler (Which is decent) while 1600x does not

Yup. It includes a good stock cooler (you can OC to about 3.8GHz before temps get too bad), and overclocks the same as the 1600X. It's the same CPU, just without a factory overclock.

If you want to game the 1600 is better even than Intel's equivalent 6c/12t offering on their High End (HEDT) platform:

You are more likely(though with the high Ryzen yields the difference is much lower than would otherwise be indicated by the SKU) to get a slightly higher overclock, better power curve, and probably better memory overclock(although obviously motherboard and the memory itself significantly impact this as well) from the 1600X than the 1600. Moreover, if you are planning on getting an aftermarket cooler, AIO or otherwise, anyway, the difference is all of 30 bucks. Now, if you plan on running stock then the 1600x is around 60 bucks more expensive if you get a cooler that isn't complete crap(Still not sure why AMD doesn't sell their coolers) since you have to buy an aftermarket cooler.

I was just thinking I should upgrade to ryzen from my current setup. It's not even a year old yet and but I can see my fps tanking in some of the games I've been playing recently

Well they are for people who never plan to overclock and want basically AMD to certify the higher clock speeds: User overclocking and validation should not be a given, it's a feature sure but optional still.

 

Now I can see that AMD pricing vs validated default clocks might not be worth it for what they're asking but I'm not inherently opposed to factory overclocks.

What do you have now and what are you considering? I have a generic build in my sig for people to follow. Ofc you may only need the cpu. I suggest the 1600 its a budget powerhouse.

I agree but on a tech forum I assume the average poster is capable of changing 2 values in the BIOS or using the noob software AMD provide (Ryzen Master, literally you just drag sliders). For anyone with a shred of experience a factory overclock is a con when they don't offer any more overall headroom, which they don't.

Basically what's in my sig. Was considering the 1600 or 1700 just need to find a board with both AM4 and AM3 mounting holes on the board. My current system would go to my gf as is minus the gpu and the cpu cooler.

In part yes, but chances are a user with 2 posts who probably joined 15 minutes ago wouldn't take for granted like us that it is that easy. I am using the Ryzen Master thingie and it does a good job of trying to scare you with a huge warning of basically "If you use this your warranty is void and your first born child will die!" every time you launch it

1600 unless you need the cores for content creation.

Whilst I agree higher I really don't think its that steep. I know plenty of people with 1700s @ 4GHz including myself. So either we (4) are very very very lucky (0.2^4*100 = 0.16%) based on 4GHz having a 20% chance.

 

EDIT: Oh and I'm at 4GHz at 1.4V not 1.44V

I game more than I do content creation but I also run VMs from time to time to test out some enterprise stuff so that's why I was considering the 1700 but I need to find another board besides the crosshair hero that has AM mounting holes since corsair has yet to ship out nay of their AM4 brackets for their AIO's.

1600 is fine. there is a possibility the 1600x might be binned but not sure. either way the 1600 will perform practically the same as the 1600x when you OC to the peak XFR range

I mean I can wait with a 1600 over my i5 right now...
