USB 3.1 gen 2 on motherboards ?

Well USB 3.1 GEN 2 is a "thing" now, which is cool.

So my mother board comes with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 front panel headers.

The problem is that it has this weird port to which i can't seem to find a connector to.

But most of all, is this backwards compatible with USB 3.0 ?

I ask because my Case only has USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 in its front panel.

One last question, if at all they were to be backward compatible, would that somehow reduce its performance ? Because this is rated  to have about 10 GB/s transfer rate.

It's all cool and dandy but there aren't any cases on the market that use this connector and have front panel USB 3.1 (type A or type C). For now it's basically futureproofing your motherboard...

He's referring the the rear I/O. And you mobo should have normal USB 3.0 and 2.0 headers.

Picture of the headers or at least a motherboard model number so we can look it up?

If you can plug the 3.0 (3.1 gen 1) front panel into the 3.1 header on the motherboard then it should just work at USB 3.0 speeds.

I edit my posts a lot.

That's true, it is available.

I was just wondering if i could use this "10 GB/s" transfer rate that Gen 2 is  said to have.

I doubt it. It may be backwards compatible, but it'll run at USB 3.0 speed, just like USB 2.0 runs at 2.0 speed no matter what header it's on.

So it looks like i am left with no choice but to buy a 3.1 port in order to access the complete speed ?

Yep, the speeds are always that of the lowest common denominator. There may be a 3.1 gen 2 port on the motherboard I/O though.

I've not seen them before, but they should be on any front panel or internal USB 3.1 gen 2 devices. So if you want a front panel port you'll need something that can go on the front panel of your PC.

Do you want Type A or Type C on the front?

Do you have any 3.5 (floppy drive size) or 5.25 inch (DVD drive size) slots on the front of your PC?

Why do you need USB 3.1 gen 2 speeds?

1. Type A is what i am looking for.

2. Yes I've got both 3.5 and 5.25 in front.

3. Who wouldn't want higher speeds ? Plus also i'm kinda curious.

I'm just having a look and there isn't much on offer. You could go with something like this: https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboard-Accessory/USB-31-FRONT-PANEL/ but it seems to use SATA Express to connect to the motherboard instead for some reason.

It looks like that might be the only one, but apparently MSI and PHANTEKS are releasing similar products which use that header.

Maybe it's best to wait a few months to see if something else comes out.

PS: Thanks for giving such prompt and concise info. :)

Exactly, its no where to be found.

But if it is backwards compatible, we could possibly use it with a USB 3.0 but i have no info on that either.

Yep I have the Cooler Master maker case 5t with 4 3.0 ports on front but the board only has 1 header for 3.0 leaving 2 ports dead on my case I was hoping to find a solution with the 3.1 gen 2 but to no avail!

Well that's a bummer. But one good news tho, Gen 2 is new and on the rising, so it looks like we will have a solution to that soon.

I hope so kinda disappointing even my msi x370 pro carbon has 2 usb 3.1 gen 1 headers on it and the fricken case that's in doesn't have 4 i/o on the front, go figure I'll surely post when I find alternative solutions when they arise.

Wow you found the holy grail :D that doesn't have much to go on I mean it looks like its more of a mod I guess you would need a 51/4 blank to install it in? I wonder what the back of it looks like since it does have 2 3.0 ports maybe I could disconnect them and switch them over to my 2 dead ports on my case? Don't know looks like I'll wait but at least its a proof of concept for others to follow thanks for that info!
