Parenting Now Vs Then

BuckGup

I feel as if parenting now days is sorta harming children. Now not all parents are like this but it's a trend that has been going on since the 2000s. Parents seem to be too over protective. Parents used to let their kids hang out with their friends all day and just bum around town on their own. Now they slap GPSes all over them and require an in depth itinerary on that days events. Again not every parent is like this and there are defiantly the opposite that allow their kids to do whatever which is also bad. It just sorta annoys me when I tell my parents I am going on a bike ride and I have to text or call them every 30 minutes otherwise they think I am overdosed on meth or procreating like rabbits. When in reality I am just trying to exercise.

Parents are so paranoid these days. You got hippie parents giving their children honey when they should be seen by a doctor yet their kids die, and they get minimal sentences because of their hippie religion. Its crazy out there.

The crime has just gotten a lot worse of the years. It's not the same as it used to be.

Crime has actually been on a steady decline since the mid 80's. I think the perception is that it's increasing and that there's a pedophile on every street corner. Besides that I think most kids these days would rather just play some dumb game on their iPad rather than go outside.

It seems to be rising because of all the media now a days. Everyone wants to be on the news, everyones got a camera on their phone.

The government cant actually dictate how you punish your child. But people get so embroiled if they see an old schooler paddle or belt their kids. I say its non of their business, yet they will record it and call the pigs.

Thats because back in the day you didn't have to worry about a rapist stealing your child. There are been several incidents in my community where a child predator was driving around trying to get the attention of children. Thats why people are paranoid.

Then there is the fact that most children dont know how to fucking act. Because now days parents cant put the fear of god in to them.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

So, the basic syllogism of the OP goes like this:

  • P1: My parents are control freaks.
  • P2: My parents are a representation of parenting in general in the current millennium.
  • C: Parenting has gone awry

There are several problems with this.

  1. Appeal from personal experience
  2. A fallacy from faulty generalization
  3. First premis is seemingly unfounded

And a couple more, but those are the major three,

You're also claiming that this sort of protective parenting is indicative of the 2000's and that this kind of parenting is harmful to children.

As of this post you haven't proven any of these claims.

it's called helicopter parenting

and if you

don't do it

you'll be

arrested

there's plenty (a scary large percentage) of terrible, irresponsible, stupid or downright abusive parents but the government wants to control the ones who let their kids take small risks not the ones beating them with jumper cables.

I am glad I grew up when I did. I got interaction with other children outside of government school, which did me little good aside from social interaction.

Fuck imagine home school kids now. Probably completely shut in. I had home schooled friends as a kid because they played in the neighborhood and yah know...learned to be a person

kids used to be roving gangs of mild troublemakers, now they are pets or something idk

and people wonder where tumblrinas come from

muh specs

It's just laws have changed. My dad spanked me once and I never did whatever I did again.

Now if you spank and the kid says something at school the teacher will get CPS called and have you investigated.

And that probably does more harm having strangest come in and ask a kid if their parents hit them.

I find that most of my friends who were over protected seem to be behind in many skills thats others have. In like social situation.

It doesn't allow the kids to go out and experience the world for them selfes when they need to. Do while your youmg and can get introuble and be fine. Don't wait for your kid to 18 then like now you can do anything and they go out and OD on drugs or get arrested.

I think people are too much into others business nowadays. Everyone cares about other people more then them selfs.

Oh well I'll parent based on what I think is right and not care about what everyone else says.

my two cents:

yes, parenting has changed, and that's due to a buttload of factors, including, and not limited to: society, parents' fear of not "becoming their parents" (for varying reasons), peer pressure on kids (if a kid sees another kid rockin' a $1000 phone, it's almost guaranteed the kid's gonna go home, throw a tantrum and demand a $1000 phone. That's always been the case, be it a phone these days or a pair of light-up shoes back in the 80s and 90s), instant gratification, lower parenting age (be it due to lack of education or personal preference).

There's a fuckload of things that basically end up in not-so-good parenting (not necessarily bad parenting).

I'll agree on the paranoia thing. The neighborhood where I currently live is one of the safest ones in the city by many standards (no hobos, not much traffic, clean, lacking hazards and such). Since I live on the ground floor, I hear a lot of mid-20s to early 30s parents dragging their kids inside at 8 or 9 PM (It's summer. Sun's barely going down at those hours) because "night is coming" and "it gets dangerous when it's late". I remember being a kid in the dead of winter at 1 or 2 AM, freezing my ass off in waist-high snow having the time of my life. Now parents will drag their kids indoors at the first sign of slightly colder or warmer weather, blasting them with central heating or air conditioning so they don't "catch a cold".

Carlin had a piece on the subject and I find it to be as accurate today as it was back then.

I remember barely being 7 when I started school. I had a key tied to my neck, the knowledge of where my home and school were and 20 minutes to get from one to the other. I don't recall ever being driven/walked to/from school or anyone ever waiting for me outside once classes were over (with the express purpose of taking me home). My scarred legs and arms (from the usual kid activities in the 90s) aren't pretty, but they sure as hell prove I had a fun childhood outside, with friends that still linger on 20 years later. I knew their names, parents, birthdays, HOME phone numbers, where they lived, when they'd come outside and play and when they'd go home. Today's kids seem to only have virtual friends in <insert some game name here>, rely on facebook (or whatever platform's hip now) for their birthdays and whatnot and figure everyone is a text message away (do kids even know what dialing is?).

And then there's the "old school" parents that had a blast growing up, with fairly strict parents (I'm not talking bootcamp strict) that knew their boundries growing up. Those are the people who will raise awesome kids and not spoiled brats. They'll teach their kids limits, respect, how to work for something and won't just bury them in luxuries they can barely afford.

I'm probably rambling at this point, but my view is that parents are either too young or have no idea how to raise their kids right and that's why the newer generations pretty much suck (except for the kids with awesome parents, but those seem to be too few and far between to even get noticed)

The biggest issues today is not parenting, but social media and the internet. Everyone thinks they are damned expert and most of the population are gullible fools who believe every fairy tale about essential oils and best parenting practices.  Not a single on of the simple minded fools understands they are being milked for clicks and sold useless stories/supplements.

Had it not been for the internet when people got sick they would go to the doctor, if they had issues with their kids they would see a pediatrician. Not read some BS story about a walk in the forest being better than SSRI's.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I think a big issue is the media/soc media rather than parenting itself. You look at those and it's constant bad news, child abductions, murders, acid attacks, terrorism, ect... I mean, with the amount of bad news that's constantly bombard at us, can you really blame parents for being overprotective?

Yeah but when crime happens its not always solved. I heard that 40% of all murders in Detroit go unsolved. Not to mention we have had too many gas station robberies as of late, where they will never be able to find the suspect. The world is a much more scary place then it was in my childhood. While crime might be lower, Ive noticed a lot more rape and child molester cases on the news. This is why some parents are the way they are.

I don't understand how crimes being unsolved is in any way a counter to a statistically recorded lowering in reported crime rates...

I never was the sort of person who regularly goes out on weekends, but the rare times I did as a teenager I never had problems with my parents - who tend to be fairly strict on many other things. This is mostly because they trusted me enough that they didn't worry I would do something stupid, even if I ended up coming back late. So I get the idea that many parents are "overprotective" because they see their children as not mature enough to handle themselves on saturday evenings, which I couldn't blame them for given what I've seen some teenagers do. It's also much easier today to do something very stupid than it was a few decades ago, and it's very likely that thing will be recorded.

Of course situations will vary, and having to text back when you go for a bycicle ride seems a little ridiculous to me, but when it comes to "society in general" I believe if anything it's quite the opposite, some parents are way too hands-off for my taste.

It's a complicated process. You have to slowly teach your children to make their own choices, and to make good choices, as they grow up. And, importantly, you need to teach them that their actions are linked to consequences (so they acn understand the meaning of "good choice').

And then, as they grow up, you have to gradually increase your trust on their independent decision making.

The problem is, once you get unbalanced in any direction, the best thing to do in the short run may be in conflict with what's best in the big scheme of things. For example, if you over-protect your kid at young ages, try to bail him out of any negative consequences, etc, (s)he may not grow very capable of taking care of her/himself, and relatively unable to see anticipate the consequences of her/his actions (and accept responsibility for them). Hence, you could legitimately be worried about what they will do to themselves if left completely on their own, leadin to more parenting actions that further restrict the children's learning process. So, in a way, being too overprotecting at one point may increase the appeal of being overprotecting later. If you don't let your kids become adults, you will have to treat them like kids all their lives (or expose them to the shock of suddenly kicking them out of the nest with zero grownup skills, which doesn't seem a great idea either).

That's the crucial part: if crime incidence goes down, and the percentage of crimes reported in the news go up, the net effect could be an increase in reported crime. Hence, perceptions about crime may change in the opposite direction as actual crime. The key work here is "scary": you may get more scared because of reporting choices by news media. It doesn't need to reflect actual risks, though.

I would have to look for it, but there was a survey about perceived death risks, and the results were compared to actual risks: there was barely any correlation at all.

In short; "The news likes to cover rapes and murders and car accidents more, because when they cover puppies for adoption and changes in key interest rates, people tend to change the channel/switch webpages to someone who WILL cover rapes and murders and car accidents."

Blame the media all you want, the media is only providing what consumers want in an effort to keep the consumers watching and seeing the commercials/ads.
