Intel Preparing Multiple Hexacore Coffee Lake CPUs

HKZeroFive

While AMD has certainly dominated the headlines this week, more details about Intel's upcoming Coffee Lake CPUs have begun to emerge.

Quote

i7-8700/K

In few months Intel will introduce new six-core processors based on Coffee Lake architecture. The high-end i7 8700K processor is reportedly running at 3.7 GHz base frequency with Hyperthreading enabled (12 threads). Compared to recently launched Core i9 7800X, the i7-8700K would have much lower TDP of 95W (vs 140W). This would without a doubt affect the sales of i9-7800X. Intel is also launching i7 8700 non-K which is said to be running at 3.2 GHz base frequency.

Core i5 with Six Cores?

The most interesting part of the rumor are 6-core processors from i5 series. The major difference compared to i7 is a lack of Hyperthreading. The i5-8600K processor is said to be clocked at 3.6 GHz with the same TDP as i7-8700K (95W).

According to CPC Hardware the six-core series will not end at 8600K. The slowest 6-core desktop CPU is allegedly the Core i5-8400 with a core clock of 2.8 GHz and TDP at 65W. This is a direct response to AMD’s Ryzen 5.

Intel's Six Core for Mobile

For the first time, Intel will also introduce pure mobile 6-core CPU. Compared to desktop variants, Coffee Lake Mobile is to feature much lower clock speeds (~2.0 GHz) with TDP at 45W.

The report ends at Coffee Lake U quad-core processor with impressive 28W TDP. This is the first quad-core CPU from Intel’s U-series (low power notebooks).

The power of competition, ladies and gentlemen!

The real interesting part is the Core i5 with six cores and six threads, which basically goes beyond the i7-7700K. I'd love to see the price and performance on that... it could honestly give AMD a hard time.

We've also yet to receive any answer or news about whether or not we'll need new motherboards for these Coffee Lake CPUs or if they are compatible with current Z170 and Z270 motherboards and only require a BIOS update. We all hope for the latter but this is Intel we're talking about.

Overall, it looks like Intel is making some huge moves. It'll all come down to pricing since I don't think anyone here is doubting performance. Exciting stuff.

Called it! Ages ago I said the new i5/i7 would be 6c/6t and 6c/12t respectively. I knew this had to happen because i5s just aren't enough with 4c/4t

EDIT: My condolences to 7600k owners that Intel was able to milk you for $250 for 1 last year before being forced to end the quad core stagnation because of Ryzen.

Intel intern: we could price these competitively...

Intel Boss: So like, 999$ for the base model?

Intel intern: Um

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

the article said that the i5's will compete with R5 CPUs so a low price and this maybe great for budget people

This the mainstream and Ryzen is here so no prepare for $250/$350 i5/i7. They could go mad with it but that would be very unwise.

makes sense, but now Linus old as video explaining I3/I5/I7 will finaly be obsolete. im pretty happy about this though, i hope there will be a trippe core in the pentium/I3 lineup...

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I wonder what's going to happen to the i3 line?  Will they make them 4c/4t like the current i5's?  I can't see them being 3c/6t.  While possible (AMD has done tri-core before), it would just be odd.

I think they have to really because R3.

If you can hold on this could be your answer instead of the 7800X or having to taint yourself with Ryzen xD

i3 is rumored 4c/4t.

Finally some movement from Intel! If they price these more competitively, they could steer the ship back towards them. Hopefully Intel will stop being bullheaded with their prices.

Its their mainstream line so expect the usual $250 $350 for their i5s and i7s.

Meh. Not sure why the continued insistence of still charging premium for hyperthreading: This would definitively make the 6/12 i7 lineup bad choices overall since you might as well jump to 8/16 on Ryzen for the prices.

They need to dump the igpu on the consumer i7s and make it 8/16 for them and 6/12 for the high end i5s and just make an enterprise oriented 6/12 i7 with an igpu for enterprise folk.

I wonder what power consumption will be :/ 14nm 6 cores ( with pretty much kaby lake µarch )  aren't going to be low power ...

Still cool though . The mainstearm platforms dictate what devs program games for . Hopefully the extra threads on my 1700 will be used in games?

I suppose quad core i7s will drop in value on the used market after launch and especially after these hit the used market.

Time to start thinking about dumping 67/7700K's on the Bay. :D
