How many of you is guilty of "I know this is way too overkill for me but I got it anyway" syndrome? I just realised that almost all of my money went into buying something tech related...

Most of the time I buy something that is a bit more overkill for me....

Needs 8GB of RAM? Get 16G anyway. :/

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Yeah I'm getting a PC that might just be a bit more than I need, but at least I know it will perform well.

Also, I need a 5GB or up flash drive for Windows and am getting a 16GB one, such overkill

I kind of want to set the poll as "public" and let all the people who voted "I only get what I need" get questions by the others. xD

Overkill suits me. Maximum longetivity out of a system, and no matter what I do, what I experiment with, I've got hardware that can handle it.

Come Bloody Angel

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Fierce Bloody Angel

Why did you come to this world?

Having dabbled in some web development, that isn't a horrible choice in laptop. Depending on IDE.

Yeah. Macs are best when it comes to programming.

Or you can choose certain models of dell laptop (XPS series) and install linux on it.

This is a clone project I did. http://unable-furniture.surge.sh/

I copied the design of the original webpage and re-built it myself.

Having done the second option, I'd rather pick up OSX again.

Haha! True. Most of the programmer i've known all recommend OS X. COs you don't need to set up anything.

Go straight to work.

I don't mean from the amount of work it takes to start coding. I mean from the usability perspective. An IDE on a weaker laptop, Linux or Windows, is something I won't recommend. Having something powerful enough to warrant a dGPU is a much more preferable option.

Ah... use sublime text 3. Some people recommend atom, but it is too buggy for me.

Overkill a totally unknown concept

There can never be too much memory in your computer
There can never be too much storage space on your computer
The computer can never be too "fast"

You can never have too many weapons in your cabinet
And not too much ammo for those weapons

The list could continue indefinitely, but ....
You probably got an idea why "overkill" is an unknown concept to me

I'm not as bad as I used to be. In the old days I had a dual Xeon with 6800 Ultra as a file server, purely as it was too noisy for gaming :)

Now it is more about number of systems than what an individual system is. I keep thinking I need to reduce some of the older ones but I always run out of time before I dismantle it to sell selected components.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible
