The Skylake-X Mess Explored: Thermal Paste And Runaway Power

Source 1: posted by It’s me! https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/805432-the-skylake-x-mess-explored-thermal-paste-and-runaway-power/

Source 2:  http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/-intel-skylake-x-overclocking-thermal-issues,5117.html

  • So far, Skylake-X has been plagued by two main issues:

    • At its stock settings it can barely be cooled during normal operation. This is due to its power consumption being extremely high in some situations, and its thermal paste preventing waste heat from being dissipated effectively.

    • There’s barely any room for enthusiasts to overclock. Also, many motherboards limit Skylake-X CPUs further due to poor design choices, such as insufficient VRM cooling.

$200 Wireless Oculus Rift in the works for 2018

Source 1: posted by jammiescone https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/807124-200-wireless-oculus-rift-in-the-works-for-2018/

Source 2:  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-13/facebook-said-to-plan-200-wireless-oculus-vr-headset-for-2018

  • Apparently Facebook is working on a new headset, code-named “Pacific,”  which is designed to bridge the gap between cheap smartphone-mounted VR headsets and high-end gaming rigs

  • The will sell for as little as $200 and need not be tethered to a PC or phone: it will ship next year and represent an entirely new category.

  • the device resembles a more compact version of the Rift and will be lighter than Samsung’s Gear VR headset

  • The idea is that someone will be able to pull the headset out of their bag and watch movies on a flight just the way you can now with a phone or tablet.

  • The new headset will have a similar interface to Samsung’s VR Gear and can be controlled by a wireless remote.

  • Facebook plans to power the product with a Snapdragon mobile chip from Qualcomm

  • The device’s gaming power is superior to that of the Gear VR, but unlike the powerful Rift device, will not include positional tracking technology.

    • This means that the device won’t be able to tell where its user is spatially

    • A future version of the product will have that technology

  • The company plans to begin briefing content makers on the device by October

  • The downloads store will be re-written and accessible from the virtual reality interface itself

  • Oculus has plans to enlist China’s Xiaomi and its network of contract manufacturers to produce the new headset for global distribution

  • Facebook has said it’s also working on a prototype device code-named Santa Cruz that’s basically a wireless Rift, with the full power of the original device sans PC.

  • Some of the world's largest internet companies joined in a day of protest against the United States' Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

    • Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, Google, Twitter and more

  • The organizers of the “day of action” reached more than 10 million users with their message, while generating at least 2.1 million comments urging the Federal Communications Commission to rethink its plans

  • By Thursday morning the FCC’s own comment database had received more than 718,000 submissions related to net neutrality on July 12

  • But did participating companies do enough?

    • Google didn’t include anything near its search bar. Instead, it dispatched an email to followers of its “take action” policy website.

    • Amazon, Facebook and Google didn’t darken their webpages, like some companies and their alerts to users weren’t always easy to find.

  • Zillow threatened to sue, saying that she was violating its terms of use, copyright law, and possibly the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act because she took images from the company's website without permission.

  • on each of her posts, she acknowledged that the images came from Zillow and were posted under the fair use doctrine, as she was providing (often humorous) commentary

  • Zillow does not even own the images in question, they license them from the rights holders - do they have standing to sue?!?!

  • After being temporarily shut down, the blog is back online

    • Her lawyers say: “Our client has no obligation to, and thus will not, comply with Zillow’s demands. Zillow’s legal threats are not supported and plainly seek to interfere with protected speech”

Vega FE Hybrid Mod - Passing the 1080 but 400W+ Power Draw

Source 1:  posted by Hunter259 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/807071-vega-fe-hybrid-mod-passing-the-1080-but-400w-power-draw/

Source 2: http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2986-amd-vega-hybrid-mod-results-overclocking-liquid-vs-air

  • power leakage reduction under liquid granted an additional ~40MHz of OC headroom on the core (by way of granting ~30W more to the core)

  • Under max consumption and overclock current at the PSU cables was ~33.3A at 12V, or just under 400W (+/-2% error).

  • The gains in thermals were tremendous, ultimately affording the reduction in power leakage (and overall increased power available to the core).

  • Performance gains ranged from 6% to 27%, depending on application and how the GPU is used.

  • Robert Frederick Nelson, who committed a number of felonies after escaping from a Minnesota prison in 1992,  applied for a renewal of his Nevada identification card on June 5, 2017.

  • Investigators withheld the card after the DMV's facial-recognition system showed the same person had previously held a Nevada driver's license under a different name.

  • Nelson had assumed a new identity after escaping prison, obtaining a Nevada commercial driver license.

  • At some point during the mid-2000s, Nelson assumed his original identity.

  • Both identities are associated with multiple felonies.

the term may be technically wrong, but really it's not so far off, Ryzen (and with it Epyc, Threadripper, Naples and anything else I may be missing) is really just a collection of CCX units crammed onto a single Die to get more cores, hence the need for Threadripper CPU's to be so freaking GIGANTIC so you can kinda see where Intel is coming from with the comment.

can't wait for the "1,000 dollar CPU Shoot Out" TM video they will most definitely do when both those CPU's are accessible to them. @Slick @LinusTech I'm assuming you have this planned already.

the rumors around epyc are beyond hilarious, I was planning out my next new server and my supplier was telling me "he'd been informed" that the chip design meant we could cheaply customize some ridiculous number of cores and slap them in a custom mobo for about the same price as one high end xeon, they then go on to try and pre-sell (different from pre-order?) me a blade setup actually giving me a price quote for a stack of 16 with a single blade supposedly having 4x of these procs, if I weren't legitimately interested I would've laughed myself to death on the spot at how absurd it sounded.

so I thought I'd clarify for anyone else actually looking at epyc for a server

first up what they've got is what you'll get, you can toss custom right out the window if you're getting your news from the internet instead of directly from the manufacturer

next up, these I can't imagine ever going in blades let alone some quad socket setup based on current dimensions, plan for at least a 2u per dual socket at minimum.

if we do end up seeing some revised edition down the road you can still bet your ass you're not getting 256 threads per blade and anyone telling you otherwise is psyching themselves out with hype.

Of course maybe I'm wrong and in a decade after we've moved away from current manufacturing methods and are all using some thousand or so terahertz (petahertz I know) biomechanical based neuron/synaptic chips, inexplicably derived from vacuum tubes, (seriously? actually not joking) and phase changing circuits controlled by Spasers (their name not mine), maybe then you'll see that kind of thing happen. just before everyone gets their very own quantum computer inserted in their brain. right around the same time enterprise clients are moving from liquid storage systems to DNA liquid storage systems from basic water up to primordial ooze and love juices. this is what happens when someone takes a joke too seriously. of course we're still playing carbon nanotubes and graphene now laced with fluoride so who knows what unholy spawn that will bring us, the fluoride apparently making it a semiconductor instead of an insulator so instead of trying to merge graphene with nanotubes maybe we just make the nanotubes of graphene?

timestamps on the articles might give you the same hint which is that intel was claiming 10ghz processors and 100tb hard drives by 2007 way back in 2001 along with memristors and other similar pipedreams, only ever believe what you have in front of you because the rest if it ever comes is decades away.

In the mean time carnegie mellon has been teaching about ultra-wideband positioning systems since tv's went digital and at&t bought up half the airspace, so microsoft getting in isn't a surprise I just wonder what it'll cost.

2) I'm missing here an article about G4560. How this CPU is so great, that it killed i3 and Intel cut down production. Cause why would Intel make chips people actually need and like when they can sh*t on AMD with $1999 parts.

I randomly picked that spot.

I think they're very childish statements from Intel, very unprofessional. I think it's nice to see AMD with good products like this since it gives Intel more reason to try make something better again. Trying to do better would make more sense than spewing out random childish comments and it's like they're comparing a vacuum cleaner to a fan in them statements.

Fan: PROS: Better airflow for cooling. CONS: Less suction. Can't clean carpet.

Vacuum: PROS: Better suction. CONS: No airflow for cooling. Cleans carpet.

That's what them statements are like. Some are so unrelated that it's like saying one thing nothing to do with the other whatsoever, like this mop can clean your floor but this other mop can't do your shopping o.O

Basically I would use either Intel or AMD I'm not exactly a fanboy, but the one thing Intel still have the upper hand for is single core processing. I would have probably went with Ryzen only the most demanding thing I need to do on my computer is game which the 7700k is supposed to be better for anyway. With that being said, the Ryzen clearly isn't bad for gaming at all, it's still early days and I'm sure AMD will be doing a lot of optimizations to their new architecture and this is something very new and different from them. It's like one of these performance for money things depending on what you plan to use your system for I suppose with the really demanding multi core multi thread applications benefiting from Ryzen with all the extra threads.

Love the ending how it screwed up xD
