Keep my i7-4790K or upgrade to Kaby Lake?

Hello!

 

Okay so these are my system specs atm:

CPU: i7 4790K (Not overclocked atm)

MB: MSI Z97I AC Mini ITX

RAM: 8GB 16000MHz Corsair Vengence

HDD: WD 1TB Blue

 

I want to upgrade to a M.2 SSD on the board as it's faster than a SSD can be but would need to change my board to the ASRock Z97E-ITX http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/z97e-itxac/ 

OR

Should I take this opportunity to upgrade to a i5 from Kaby Lake (as that's what I would be able to afford) or should I stick with my current build?

 

TLDR: My options are:

1) Keep system as is and add a SATA SSD

2) Upgrade my MB and get a M.2 SSD

3) Replace CPU, RAM and MB and add a M.2 SSD?

Sata SSD;

 

Going from SATA -> m2 is barely noticeable (I use a SM951 in my rig) but going from HDD to SATA is huge.

Eh... i7 4790k is quite a bit better than i5 7600k. Overclocked i7 4790k pretty much matches the stock i7 7700k.

 

What do you need faster SSD for?

Thanks! So would you recommend changing my motherboard for one with a M.2 slot as I am mainly a content creator and not a gamer?

Just get the PCI-e to M.2 card?

Make sure that your BIOS is up to date if you get NVME. (nevermind, mini ITX motherboard...)

Get the motherboard that supports m.2 ssd for your i7 4790k. Going to an i5 7600k would be a downgrade. It would also suffer a lot in regards to content creation which is what you do so I do not recommend downgrading to the i5.

Yeah it's a mini-itx board, I've heard M.2 is much quicker the SSD?

Thank you! I think it's looking the best option, is a M.2 drive faster than a normal 2.5"  SSD?

An nvme m.2 ssd like the 960 Evo is faster however, a sata m.2 ssd like the 850 Evo version is the exact same speed as a regular 2.5" ssd.

m.2 is a form factor of ssd, like 2.5" 

unless it specifically states that it uses the nvme protocol then it wont be faster

Upgrading to an M.2 drive, NVMe or SATA III, is not worth the cost. Adding a 2.5" SATA III ssd would be a good investment. Get the largest ssd that you can afford.

 

Overclocking the cpu might also provide a decent performance boost. The motherboard has features that facilitate overclocking.
