6.5gb of ram used on idle

Billy_Mays

I'm just idling in my laptop and I have over 6gb of ram being used I only have realtemp, steam, chrome and, task manager and I do have one slot open on my laptop but the problem is trying to get into it and the most of the tasks in task manager that's eating up all of my ram I can't close due to me having restrictions on my laptop but I never go onto stupid websites

Im mostly on discord now and you can find me on my profile

My Build: Xeon 2630L V, RX 560 2gb, 8gb ddr4 1866, EVGA 450BV

My Laptop #1: i3-5020U, 8gb of DDR3, Intel HD 5500

so you say the laptop is idle, but you have lots of stuff open... start by closing all of your stuff, and then see what the usage is like.

also, make sure Windows isn't updating, it consumes a bit of ram when it does that.

Close everything - that's idle. What you are describing is nowhere near idle.

The something is open in the background. I've seen Windows 10 use as little as 400+ MB of RAM at idle, not 6GB+.

Probably viruses if you haven't tried that. What scanner will you use?

How can Win10 use that little. My laptop in a fresh install used 2.5GB without opening anything except task manager...

Laptop still has norton but it's gone really wonky lately I couldn't do a backup even though my drive was connected, won't let me do a bunch of stuff, might use Windows Decrapifer and remove all bloat ware and remove norton and use Windows Defender

maybe on machines that have very little ram. if you have more, windows will load more stuff into memory.

on a machine with 1gb of ram, it will use that little. on my machine with 6gb, it will use more.

Get the latest drivers for it from the realtek website. Reboot PC.

Stock windows drivers always cause memoryleaks.

I've updated them already but and after restart 3.3gb used

This is normal windows uses a set amount of ram to keep the system usage at max speed it depends on your installed ram size for example I have 24 gig ram and a usage of around 4-6 gig ram on a clean install. If it bothers you there is a setting to lower this but I cant remember where it is located do mind that this is reserved ram and is used if needed by an application.

I don't know really. It shot up to more when anything was open, but it did it.
