Elon Musk's Tesla to build world's biggest lithium ion battery to secure power for South Australia (SA)

Our real life Tony Stark is back to improve the world, even at the risk of him loosing $50 million. This is a big step to bringing stable energy to areas that have been experiencing power problems, which can even translate to smaller scale batteries to bring power to developing countries. The 100 day guarantee by Mr. Musk doesn't seem like just him being cocky but more like he already has something in the works and he is confident that it will deliver.

Quote

Key points:

  • A 100-megawatt (129 megawatt hour) battery is to be in place before summer
  • It will provide energy stability for SA and also be emergency back-up for shortfalls
  • Elon Musk is sticking by a "100 days or free" promise for SA taxpayers

@Comic_Sans_MS is too close for the protection to matter.

It would have been so much better if Elon Musk invested on emerging technologies that will address shortcomings of the current Li-ion battery like Graphene unless he can improve Nickel-Cadmium batteries which is very unlikely and much worse than Li-ion.

But any way, like I said earlier I agree with you. With his capability, Mr. Musk needs to look into improving the existing problems with Li-ion. On the other hand, this project is a great way to test the limits of scaling Li-ion batteries to such great heights. Maybe it can even lead to faster manufacturing practices for large scale batteries since he is giving his company such a strict time constraint.

I wonder if the Gigafactory would put any particular damper on that. I mean, he's shown to be a rather extreme case of "I don't care about the money, I just want to make things," but investing so much in manufacturing one type of battery might make changing the type of battery rather impractical.

That is, unless the Gigafactory can be easily modified to accommodate the change.

Watched Ironman?  Tony Stark is based off the Tony Stark from the Ironman comicbook, first released in May 1968.  3 years before Elon was born.

OT: Good, batteries are required to make green energy tech worthwhile.  But still realistically need a nuclear plant as a base for any advanced society of worthwhile size.  Don't think there are any in use in Oz.  It's simply best to mesh a few different energy generation types together and use them all at the same time so you can capitalize on each techs strength when appropriate to do so.

That isn't the only planned Gigafactory. Also, alternative battery types aren't developed enough to put them in production.

Yeah, which is why he would need to invest in their development...

Robert Downey Jr. based his performance of Tony Stark largely on Elon Musk. Not entirely, of course - as much inspiration was drawn from the original comic book character. But the current MCU iteration was definitely modelled after - to some degree - Elon Musk:
