Most powerful LGA775 chip to buy used?

Hi All,

 

My file server is currently a crappy Core2Duo E5200. So I've been looking at what other chips I could throw in there to give it a kick, but I'm seeing some Xeon's on eBay which talk about adapters because of 42nm...

 

Does anyone know what the highest cores & clock I can get for this socket? It's only a little folly so I'd say anything up to like £30-40 on eBay.

 

The ones I'm seeing on eBay are a little confusing when it comes to the sockets, as many say compatible with 775 but they're actually a 771 or something else.

This is a file server, you don't need much cpu at all. 

 

What board, they don't all take all cpu's. But the fastest chips are the ones like the q9450.

I know the Q6600 is decent, and I think the Q9590 is better (Did I type it right?). @Ordinarily_Greater Is getting an LGA 775 CPU if I remember right, so he may be able to help you out.

I know I don't HAVE to do it...but I like tinkering around with stuff 

 

The board is a Pegatron 2A73h, but it's also listed as a IPIBL-LB (Benicia) from HP.

I ran a Xeon X5460 in a 775 board. You need to hack the BIOS and add the mod sticker. There are plenty of guides on it, just google "socket 771 to 775 mod" and you'll find a site called delidded.com that has a ton of info on it. Systems like the Inspiron 530 have mod BIOSes already available.

 

If you don't want to blow a ton of cash on a CPU, the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 is a decent performer, you can find them for as little as $15 USD on Amazon. Don't buy CPUs off eBay, as most of them either don't work or will die after a while. Speaking from tons of firsthand experience here.

Honestly...I don't even recall where the system came from 

 

Up until I was messing around with it tonight (When I found 4GB of spare RAM I had and decided to pop it in there), I didn't even know what board it was!

Sorry i am late, well @Ezzy-525 i am getting LGA 775 chip that is not the top and not decent, if there is any used core 2 quad i just want to get it and the example is Q8400

I "think" I actually have something Core2Quad in the garage at the minute...will have to check after work. I seem to recall it being a Q8200 for some reason...hmmm.
