The fad for Pokemon Go may be over but still I wouldn't call a game with 65 millions player monthly dead at all.

Quite frankly, VR and AR on mobile is piss poor, and won't cause either to become popular from utility, only as a passing fad because the cool factor wears out before thw devices can drive anything actually worth while.

Yeah, I don't think AR is gonna get to be popular until we start seeing Augmented Reality Headsets that are affordable.

Apple put their name on something that already existed.

 

No it won't. People that are going to go outside will go outside regardless.

 

The limited utility will boil down to a few useful apps of phone, that we already have. Peripherals for PC, and some games. It won't replace anything. There has to be hardware to power it. Only thing we're waiting for is a consumer version of Hololens to come out.

There's a huge difference between having a closed mind and questioning the validity and usability of a product/concept. As it stands, AR on mobile is and will be a fad. Few "AR" tools will be helpful to a somewhat nuche market, but thise already exist.

I just realized you seem to have a misunderstanding of what AR actually is. It's not as simple as placing a virtual object when the camera is turned on, but the ability of the virtual object to interact with the real world, which involves tracking different plane surfaces, adapting to different lighting conditions and distance determination between each and every point in the frame. 

 

To put it in perspective, Pokemon go used to place Pokemon in the middle of the screen regardless where you were, but with AR kit the Pokemon will only stay on a flat surface and will react to real-world manipulation. This takes some serious Machine Learning algos and I'm baffled on how Apple achieved this with only a single rear camera. It's truly a huge accomplishment and innovation, and most of the internet, save for die hard haters (ahem) agree

Snapchat uses simple face recognition for its dog face, that has existed for years and years in the camera app. This is NOT the same as what other vendors have on their phone

 

This, what Apple did is the real deal, similar to holo lens and project tango, but much superior, works on most ios devices and actually available to the public. Keep denying it, and youll just prove youre ignorant
