Apple's Augmented Reality effort with ARKit on iOS 11 just blew out the competition

This is not a news but rather a report on what developers have done so far with Apple's ARKit that will be available with iOS 11 this fall

I know this is about a week old but every day there are new AR apps that honestly look pretty impressive

 

This is pretty much a classic example of where Apple was never the first but undoubtedly the best. And to quote Craig Federighi, "iPhones and iPads became the largest AR platform, virtually overnight"

The tracking and the accurate detection is quite frankly mind blowing especially considering that none of these devices actually have any kind of dedicated hardware rather just making use of a single camera and some advanced ML

 

ARKit will be available with iOS 11 this fall and you can get the public beta right now from Apple's website for free. ARKit is supported on devices with A9 chip and above

Being able to measure things without a ruler and without having to guesstimate using the dimensions of whatever you have on you would be really nice actually. I can't tell you how many times I've measured something long with the approximate length of my foot or something smaller with the diagonal length of my phone's screen.

AR is quite possibly the most useful innovation in mobile phones since touchscreens or cameras.

Thing is that will not work that way. Without a reverence it cannot work out the length by itself. 

Tho i can imagine you having to carry a creditcard with a symbol on it will be its reference.

Being able to measure, taking a virtual tour, furniture, next gen gaming, etc. the potential here is incredible

Sadly not. Only 6S, 7 & SE are supported as of now along with iPads with those chips

AR is definitely gonna get real popular once ios 11 roll out.

No, it's not. Just like most of the party tricks of the Apple pen, the only software that will support it half way decently is Apple's tech demos.

Quite frankly, VR and AR on mobile is piss poor, and won't cause either to become popular from utility, only as a passing fad because the cool factor wears out before thw devices can drive anything actually worth while.

AR is much more the future than say VR will ever be. The applications it can be used for is endless. Your smart phone is becoming more of an extension or a tool of your body that you will always have on you. Being able to go to another country and holding up your phone so see all the foreign words translated for you is a liver safer. Showing a skeletal structor over laid on someone's body will help med students learn better and faster. Not to mention Pokemon Go blew up and it was AR and it brought people outside. The hololens has been applauded grealty and it's the same thing strapped to your face. Just because apple is the one who is pushing this or made it first doesn't mean it sucks.

Just because it's Apple and they are helping push new technology doesn't mean you have to deny it. I give it 4 months and Samsung is showing off their AR stuff and you will be like THIS IS THE FUTURE. As it is

Quite frankly, VR and AR on mobile is piss poor, and won't cause either to become popular from utility, only as a passing fad because the cool factor wears out before thw devices can drive anything actually worth while.

Most of the "party tricks in Apple's pen" have made it mainstream and people today can't live without these features. And who told you that only Apple apps will take advantage of it. This isn't something like on Android or Samsung store where no devs give a rat's ass. This is Apple. They're known for pushing the industry.

 

This is exactly what Project Tango, Hololens, etc were supposed to be, yet they're still stuck in development with too many complications while Apple just basically released a version that works on most people's iPhons and iPads with similar experience of the aforementioned without the use of any special, expensive, dedicated hardware

The only point I agree with is on a phone its a bit pointless, but its a stepping stone. things like the Halolens and when apple launches their head unit are the only thing I've seen in tech that is actually ground breaking in so so many years, you will never need a phone or computer again. AR uses are amazing not a fad.

 

Maybe keep the salt for your Dota games.

I don't know if people would accept head sets considering how well google glass turned out. Honestly seeing how phones are only getting faster and smaller I wouldn't doubt it if you just had your phone and that had everything on it. Like your identification, payments, and also when you go to a computer you just dock it and the computing is done in the cloud. That is if the battery lasted a tad longer

See for me I'm so happy to go headset, I want a halolens so bad. bring my arm up and get a mass effect interface with my messages and emails, get rid of my screens at my work desk and have 3 floating screens that i can move around and resize, while having a big virtual screen on the wall streaming content while I work, Working on my car been able to see the instructions and what needs to be done to change stuff. Hell even driving around seeing a big red line on the road for the GPS. and my favorite idea, turning the lounge into a giant minecraft field or better yet getting a starcraft style RTS and playing against mates when I can walk around and command them around the furniture Enders game style. 

 

Also playing a zombie survival game in the park with some mates and the golden dream of getting Pokemon (not GO paper toss shit) like Fire red Heart gold in real life. catch train and battle. while a phone could do them it wouldn't be as seamless and I can't use my hands to engage in stuff. Halolens+Gestures.. man AR gets me so Damn excited.

The limited utility will boil down to a few useful apps of phone, that we already have. Peripherals for PC, and some games. It won't replace anything. There has to be hardware to power it. Only thing we're waiting for is a consumer version of Hololens to come out.
