With the release of OS X 10.12 (Aka macOS Sierra), Apple changed the name of their operating system from OS X to macOS.

I noticed that the "Linux, OS X and Everything Not-Windows" subforum still uses "OS X", perhaps it would be a good idea to update it to reflect the changes made by Apple? ("Linux, OS X and Everything Not-Windows" -> "Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows")

 

What do you all think?

"Turnip" is not a bad idea. People might get lost but it would avoid the daily poll that gets started about which linux distro is best.

i think it could just be called "NOT Windows systems"

OS X is synonymous with macs/apple. So I don't really see the need to change it. At least not now anyways.

But OS X is no longer the name of Apples OS. Sure people will know it means a Mac but its still the incorrect name.

Most people are probably still using OS X though, no? The "and everything non-windows" in the title covers any OS's not mentioned, including macOS. ;)

To be a bit more correct, people can issues with both OS X (older) and macOS (newer). So putting macOS as a replacement over OS X would not be fair.

Not sure if you mean the actual software or the name

 

But either way most Macs run MacOS Sierra. MacOS is OS X, OS X doesn't exist anymore xD its been absorbed.

there are multiple years in between all of those, and that last one is just made up for the heck of it.

Since Apple made OS upgrades free, I see no reason why people wouldn't update. (With the exception of unsupported hardware, if that's even an issue with Apple's computers.)

 

Also, OS X and macOS are the "same" operating system, macOS is just the new name for it.

How many active posts is that daily/weekly? Last division from OS and Software was made with forum upgrade to current form. And that was mainly because of Windows threads chucking whole thing. They aren't doing another split unless certain threads are drowning all others, or if others would survive without Linux threads.

the first 3 pages sorted on last reply are >89% linux. about 3 of them are about chromebooks, 4 about macos, 1 about freeBSD, so 8 of the 75 posts are not about linux kernel based operating systems. they are not necessarily drowned but niche operating systems will get ignored since it generally already takes longer for someone to reply on them since its niche and for a very very specific group of people, very little people know anything about it beyond its existence and some platforms build on it like FreeNAS (topics about freenas get placed under servers and NAS most of the time anyways).

the way the mods see it the amount of people that would even consider using MacOS (because almost everyone is a gamer here and doesn't have separate computers) is so small and so it the Linux install base that grouping them up helps with forum activity being higher.

I agree with your post. There's quite a lot of Linux distributions as it is and since it's been together with "everything else not Windows" for so long, I think it would be inappropriate/unnecessary. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Apple indeed does have their own forum, though you probably won't get much help there for stuff like hackintosh.

You wouldn't get help on that particular topic in here either since its banned. But I do agree that just a brand having their own forum doesn't mean others couldn't have such. In here decision is based on amount of topics made and active topics.
