Need a cheaper CPU alternative

I am looking for a cheaper alternative to an Intel Core i7-6700K. I want to run newer games smoothly at as high quality as possible. I initially chose the 6700K, but now I might be facing some budget cuts due to getting less hours at work than anticipated, so I am looking for an alternative that can achieve the same goal, but for less cost. I'll be making an alternate budget build plan which I can fall back on to varying degrees depending on my funds.

Any suggestions?

I would go with Ryzen or if you don't mind used parts with limited upgradeability you could look at used xeons

Ryzen 5 1500X is Quad Core and much less expensive than the i7

U can get a cheaper board really, IX is very expensive

R5 1600 is significantly worse than i7 6700k or 7700k in gaming mind you

depends a little on the resolution and fps targets you want to play at, ryzen will push 1080p 60fps without an issue, most games it will be able to do more, and it will perform about the same as an i7 at 4k. And if you choose ryzen there's the question of whether you are OCing it yourself, in which case get the cheaper r51400 or 1600 as the 1500x and 1600x are just factory OC'd chips and you'll be able to do just as well on their cheaper variants, leaving a bigger budget for that graphics card, maybe get a 1080 instead of a 1070 since the cost difference is so small right now

you have two options, either you go with a R5 1600 or you get a G4560 right now to upgrade to a 7700K later

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

I am not overclocking at all. I have no interest in it since it is essentially a russian roulette of computer hardware. I know that I sacrifice performance, but I really don't want to gamble.

EDIT: My resolution target is 1080p, and my FPS target is 60.

Ryzen CPUs are fairly cheap, if you want an up to date CPU. I recently swapped my old CPU for a Core i5-4670K (which is an OEM chip, so you may be hard pressed to find one for under $200 like I did). But I know there's a similar i5 and a i7 of the same series you might be able to find relatively cheap. Be aware that they are LGA 1150 CPUs, not LGA 1151, like the 6700K

Not sure where you get this idea, as long as you get a good psu and a good mobo the only way you're going to break your cpu is if you don't cool it (which some modern cpus have shown they'll throttle and be just fine, don't try at home) or you try to give it way too much voltage, and you can figure out safe ranges in overclocking guides.

In all the detailed coverage of overclocking that I have seen, they usually say that if it can be sustained varies from CPU to CPU, GPU to GPU, chip to chip, etc.
