Britain's brand new aircraft carrier runs on ... XP

5952885e7e201_QueenElizabethXP.jpg.ed1239eb7edb5a37a4d1007c6a28caa3.jpg

Britain's latest aircraft carrier, the £3 billion HMS Queen Elizabeth was launched earlier this week.  Reportedly the brand new flagship of the Royal Navy is running some (or maybe all) of its IT on Windows XP and will keep doing so until at least 2026, way beyond the deadline for even XP Embedded/POSready.

Quote

According to The Times, journalists taken on a press tour of the Queen Elizabeth last week saw a computer monitor displaying Windows XP logos. It is not clear whether all of the ship's computers are using XP, or just some.

An unnamed defence source told The Times that XP was likely being used because the ship's IT would have been ordered in 2004, when it was still commonplace, but is now laughably out of date.

It is reportedly due to stay in use until 2026, when both the Queen Elizabeth and its sister vessel HMS Prince of Wales will have their systems updated.

So to those saying that "if you don't want ransomware etc you should just update to Windows 10", this should indicate that it isn't always that easy.  I'm fairly confident that it's not the price of some Win10 licenses that's stopping them from upgrading.

it was designed in 2004, so they probably never upgraded the computer systems also probably all the computer systems were ready before the boat was actually completed

So it's basically a time machine where you step back in time to 2004, but then go out on deck and fight in 2017? That'd mess with my head a bit if I tried it.

The military still have many legacy systems and such that rely on XP. So until they're all no more, XP it is.

Most likely this will be a system heavily modified by the MOD. There's no way they'll leave it open to obvious OS based vulnerabilities in the age of everything being hacked.

I guess it's not internet connected, so that reduces the risk greatly. I believe our nuclear weapon armed subs rely on XP too. If it's deemed good enough for our nuclear deterrent why not an aircraft carrier (that fun fact we won't have any aircraft to use with it)?

Almost all military systems run XP.

Microsoft makes millions from governments in providing support and development on XP.

Ehh.

No offense my man but I'm pretty sure the British government and the people they hire know a hell of a lot more about IT and about hacking aircraft carriers than you do.  Most military systems run off of XP for a reason.

You're putting a lot of faith in a government....Look at USPS and tell me you still trust governments to do a good job.

I guess it won't really matter which OS their new aircraft carriers run on, if they can't be used.
