Computer Getting Extremely Hot

StayFrostyy

Hi guys.

After building my computer and having it run in a stable manner for a while I noticed the system would get pretty toasty under load (~80C). This is a little hot for a PC, but still safe for the components. That was in the winter. It's currently summer here.

My system temps have climbed to as high as 87C, even triggering a freeze while playing Overwatch last night, most likely due to overheating. I immediately began troubleshooting as to what's getting hot and why. The CPU seems to be sitting at 39C idle, which is a little high for idle but given that it is summer, I'm not concerned. However, the GPU is at 52C as I'm typing this short forum post. Nothing GPU intensive is running; just Firefox, Skype, and SpeedFan are up. This is ridiculously high for idle. How should I approach cooling down the GPU?

Put new thermal paste on the gpu

It will void the warranty (I think that's MSI's policy) and is unlikely to change anything so don't

You could get EVGA Precsion X or MSI afterburner and bump the fan speeds up a bit for the GPU and if the CPU is an issue dial back the overclock a bit

Make sure the GPU isn't clogged up with dust first. What is your fan configuration? It definitely helps to have intake fans pulling cooling air in and exhaust fans pushing the hot air out.

I wouldn't really worry about the GPU too much. As pointed out above, like many GPU's, the fans don't spin up when idle.

The CPU on the other hand could do with the overclock being dialled back a tad. What voltage have you it set to in the BIOS?

I see you have a corsair H50. My 4690K typically stays around 70c at 1.265v with a Corsair H105 dual radiator, so that's always an option. The bigger the rad the better, if you have room.

I'd see about putting some new thermal paste on the CPU.

Maybe use it as an opportunity to put a new liquid cooler in.

it would help to let us know your cpu and gpu temps under load if you could :)

MSI's warranty policy is pretty laid back. As long as you don't damage anything directly by modifying the card they don't care. Even if you damage the warranty stickers.
