NSA sends data traffic overseas to side-step USA laws and achieve unrestrained spying on USA citizens

Delicieuxz

NSA's use of 'traffic shaping' allows unrestrained spying on Americans

Quote

A new analysis of documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden details a highly classified technique that allows the National Security Agency to "deliberately divert" US internet traffic, normally safeguarded by constitutional protections, overseas in order to conduct unrestrained data collection on Americans.

According to the new analysis, the NSA has clandestine means of "diverting portions of the river of internet traffic that travels on global communications cables," which allows it to bypass protections put into place by Congress to prevent domestic surveillance on Americans.

In summarization: To get around already-flimsy USA laws against spying on USA citizens, the NSA shuttles USA internet traffic overseas so they can pretend that they’re monitoring foreign communications.

Surprising? It shouldn't be. If you can think of it, they're doing it. And I think the same goes for how and why Microsoft gathers users' data.

people want security and peace of mind when it comes to terrorist style attacks, but don't want to be spied on?

odds are they aren't even watching you, and if they are well i hope they like what they see lol

It's not surprising. We have been suspect of the five eyes for doing this for a long time. Also Snowden mentioned it in an interview. I can't remember which one, might have been the one with Kim dot com in aucklands town hall via video link

I haven't seen anybody begging to be spied on to prevent terrorist attacks. What I think people want is security and peace of mind that they aren't being spied on. That's what I want.

And there's the problem: As soon as your activity is scrutizined by others, particularly government, they become the judge of you, and you are no longer a sovereign person. And if they want you to be guilty, then they will decide you're guilty of something. You are then their subject and slave.

Also, privacy is a basic human need.

that's not how it works

NSA spies on everyone nut just those suspected of terrorism

and the real problem isn't you know they're spying on random people, but how do they secure they data gathered - because it's already known they don't secure it very well or at all

Then you haven't been following Theresa may in the U.K. She is going to make some draconian laws and everyone in the five eyes will follow. They are meeting in Canada this week to discuss industry cooperation

i beleive government will fuck up and have a privacy breach. There have been several in nz over the last decade due to budget cuts and derpy staff

Both(Apple and Microsoft) already have colluded with the US government's mass surveillance of civilian data. They(The companies and the Obama administration) claim they've stopped but I seriously doubt that. When you attain that much power it's impossible to give it up.

The only problem is large parts of the internet use static routes and very tightly controlled BGP advertisements. You can't just shape network data to a different path like that, something else is at play if they are diverting traffic.

Edit:

The research cites several ways the NSA is actively exploiting methods to shape and reroute internet traffic -- many of which are well-known in security and networking circles -- such as hacking into routers or using the simpler, less legally demanding option of forcing major network providers or telecoms firms into cooperating and diverting traffic to a convenient location.

Sighhh, that's not traffic shaping. If you don't know what a technical term is I wish people wouldn't use it.

Eh, there's a lot less here than the headlines point to. Yes, they could have the ability to shift US to US internet traffic outside of the States, though that's going to really break down the speed and would need to be sent to a non-5Eyes country.

This is more "they can tap your phone!" doesn't mean they are.  And this probably has more to do with Telephone activity than Internet traffic.  There was some wonky effects/rules put forward about Telephone intercepts back in the 2000s.  By the nature of a lot of international calls, something like 70% of all global international phone calls go through the USA's systems. If they can force hops that would hit "no collect" rules from being used, they'd do that in a targeted situation.

Still, there's a lot of "can do this" effect.  They can also send someone to put a bullet in your head.  This looks a lot more like setting the groundwork to cause Trump problems, since it's from a CBS report.  Thus it has a propaganda purposes, I'm just not sure exactly what it is.  Might be a CIA vs NSA turf-war.  Those crop up every now and then.

I honestly wonder at this point what kind of revelation it would take to actually get a reaction from the public.  I don't think there is any amount of spying that would cause the public to care enough to do anything about it.  As long as people aren't being blocked from accessing the stuff they want, they will just roll over for anything the government does.  The masses are so uneducated and indifferent about the dangers of all this spying, that by the time they figure it out it will have been too late to do anything about it decades ago.

And the general attitude that it actually helps fight "terrorism" or whatever the current buzzword is makes it even harder to get people to care.  They think they are trading freedoms for security.  But you aren't getting any more security, just giving up freedoms.

i dunno man , domestic terrorism* is still a threat as dangerous as a foreign . No matter which president is on-board, people can be dangerous , make no mistake . deep states , cult rings , hate groups, foreign spies/criminals but presently a permanent citizen , drug cartels , Human trafficking , deep rings that work from within communities, in a broad view just having an American stamp doesn't make it less of a threat as we know from what , Oversight is a tool . Good or bad depends on where you are , But it's a tool that can be useful (in good hands).

*debatable variances

Edit:

By the way isnt this kinda old news? i do remember seeing one of the snowden slides showing this

Details separate people.

Which begs the question, did NSA's excessive monitoring and spying led to a much safer America?

Maybe if they find a way to somehow blame Russia and Putin for it, news agencies would pick it up and people would care for like 5 fucking minutes.

ofcourse they are watching YOU. Terrorists almost never get caught over the web, they get caught using cellphones and online purchases of "red flag" items.

Take Anders Bering Breivik, the mass murderer in Norway. He was known to the police, not for his extremist online persona, but because he bought FAR too much fertilizer for the tiny farm he lived on. Yet they did nothing about him.

The "spying" isnt meant to stop terrorists, that is just a ruse, it is wholly meant to chill the discussion of controversial and opposing rethoric, in addition to fiding "dirt" on political and social adversaries so they can shut them down before they can confront the powers at play.

Listen, the western governments, since the 2000s, has long since realized that letting some terrorist strikes happen, is FAR more advantageous to them, then implementing policies that would shut them down.

Why do you think China is censoring their internet? Its not because they are afraid of extremists, it's because they know that ANY dissident social uprise within such a huge population will be impossible to quell by force or policy. Thus they have to make sure there cannot be any EASY ways to cause such a uprise.

Why do you think that France has banned ALL forms of criminal statistic on race or religion? or that Sweden has a mainstream media blackout on the migrant rape and violence epidemic? Or that Germany actively teaches their people to NEVER display national pride in anything. Look at how Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Open(Vauxhall) and Audi talks about their products, they are proud of them, but they never say "fine german engineering". Even though it is a positive attribute/stereotype, they cannot say it. It is not "Politically correct" to do so in Germany.

Look at britain, wanting to control what porn you view, what things you CAN and CANNOT say. It has NOTHING to do with extremist terrorism, it has everything to do with chilling the public discussion. You wouldnt dare to look up "crippled midget scat porn" if you knew that some government suit were actively monitoring all your porn viewing. And ill tell you why. It's a shaming tacktic. Sure the government wouldnt use it, unless you ran for office or were part of a huge corporation. But the government KNOWS it, they LOGGED IT, and once they do so, it can be leaked. It can be used for blackmail. It can be used for public humiliation.

Do not once, not for a moment think that i am joking. Google, Facebook, Twitter, PornHub - they ALL admitt that what they want is information. What information? they wont say. But ANY information about you, that can be used for advertizing, political or social use, can be monetized. And once you can monetize something, corruption sets in.

Not a single government program that has ever existed, has done so without serious side effects to either a minority or the majority. NOT ONE.

IT'S ALL DONE TO CONTROL THE FLOW OF INFORMATION IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE SOVEREINGTY OF THE POWERS AT PLAY.

i love a good conspiracy, but sadly, all evidence that has surfaced over the past 2-3 years points in this direction. It is no longer a joke. It's real, and we have a very narrow window of opportunity where we can change course.
