Massdrop Killed the Hype on the HD 6XXs With the $250 Price Tag and Horrendous Shipping Date

Max_Settings

Well 20min has passed since the beginning of the second drop of the Sennheiser HD6XXs on Massdriop. The reason this is significant is because on the original drop of 5000 units they sold out within 20min. At the time of writing this the drop has only sold around 1900 units, despite the massive hype for them and over 70,000 requests. I feel Massdrop tremendously killed the hype on these by raising the price from $200 on the first drop to $250 on the second drop. People waited over 6 months for this price increase that only made them $65 cheaper then buying HD650s. I know it is supply and demand, but still. Also the shipping date is terrible. If you live in the U.S. the shipping date is December 18th. Seriously? For something you order on June 26th? If you live outside the U.S. you won't be getting yours till well into 2018. These two things I feel have greatly reduced the hype and the sales on the HD6XXs. I did buy a pair because I have been wanting a pair of HD650s for a while, but didn't like the color. I also feel that the HD6XXs will sell out, but based on the speed of sales, you can see that the price increase and the shipping date have greatly turned away customers.

As a Canuck, I wouldn't get it until 2018?! Dissapointing. When I'm more flush after August, I'd like to pick up a pair. Thanks for the comment, Max_Settings.

The HD 650 and HD 600 are already an incredible value. Given how the last drop went, none of this should really be that surprising. If $250 is too much or 6 months too long, stick with the HD 5x8/5x9 lineup of headphones.

i thought it'll sell out as soon as the drop started, but seeing the slower traffic to the site i guess you're right. it might still sell out by the time the drop ends tho, plus there's the 'private' drop from the first 6xx drop

Yesterday I wrote a thread on how Massdrop killed the sales and hype on the HD 6XXs by raising the price $50 to $250 and because of the horrible shipping times and the exclusion of many countries from purchasing. I concluded at the end of that thread that while the drop in its first 20 min had only sold 1900 units, which in the same time the original drop sold all 5000, I figured that the drop should sell out by the end of the day. Well now it is 32 hours later and the drop has only sold 4290 units. The rate at which these are being bought tanked. In fact due to the fact that this drop ends tomorrow, at the current rate this drop will not even sell the 5000 units that the first drop sold in 20min. This was a shock to me, as well as I think Massdrop. They really expected that these would go instantly, which is why it has such a short 2 day drop time. Reading through the comments people both complained about the price increase and the shipping time. I was amazed at the number of customers outside the U.S. that Massdrop has. The amount of people who complained that they could not buy these in their country was shocking to me. I think their biggest problem was excluding all of Asia. You think if you wanted to sell a product you wouldn't cut off over half of the world's population from buying it. Also I was surprised by the number of people who boycotted the drop over the price increase. I saw a ton of people who said they would rather just spend the extra $65 to get a pair of HD 650s on Amazon, then support the business practices of Massdrop. What do you guys think about the situation with the HD 6XXs? Personally I feel Massdrop really should drop the price back down to $200 especially with the insanely long 6 month shipping time, and that's only if you live in the U.S. . Outside the U.S. and you will be waiting even longer.

Is it that they didn't want to, or that they didn't have distribution rights for Asia?
Those are two very different issues.

I don't see the hype personally. I hate the design.

They said it was an issue with the last drop where people had issues with freight forwarding services and never got their item. So this time they excluded Asia to not have to worry about it.

So, the people used freight forwarding? Or Massdrop did?

If it was used by the purchasers to circumvent Massdrops country list, that's not a problem of Massdrops at all.

I'm assuming Massdrop did because that was their cited reason for not shipping to Asia

For people overseas Massdrop is a great place to buy things. Most places don't get the US's nice prices and shipping options on everything. Honestly though I wouldn't even have bought it at $200 because of those absurd shipping times, not when you can get used pairs around $200 on occasion. Modding HD580's is also significantly cheaper and arguably better-sounding, though I suppose they aren't as glamorous as the HD650's.

The design of Massdrop or the design of Sennheiser's midrange headphones?

Sennheiser's midrange, though honestly MassDrop isn't much better. Often their shipping fees make purchasing from them a much less enticing idea.

Are you saying you like the color scheme of the HD 650s better than the HD 6XXs?

No, I'm saying I hate the cheap plastic look it has and the material of the cups.
