Agreed, at the moment it seems FE uses some new driver branch. It's no the Pro line, but it's a bit more optimized for Pro work.

Listen carefully, the only persion that mentions Professional Drivers for FE, is the PCWorld guy. AMD's rep avoids confirming anything, and states that the NVIDIA Titan Xp doesn't have the drivers.

The PC World article on the video clearly states they don't have certified drivers; and so does exxactcorp.

The Radeon Pro WX7100 is a $660 card, that is essentially a downclocked RX 480, and it's barely 10% slower than the Frontier Edition in SpecPerfView tests.

So the Frontier Edition is a little optimised for those work loads, but it's barely faster than a Pro card half it's price, with 50% less TFLOPs, and 50% less VRAM.

It would be about time, haha. But given how difficult it has been to get IOMMU to work on Ryzen, I doubt AMD has a priority of getting virtualization on their product lines. 

I spend most of my time on Autodesk and Caffe. CAD is great, as long as you know what you're doing.

Yes, you can game on FirePro Cards, it's just overkill if you never use it's full abilities.

I hope they plan to cut it down and make "gaming" GPUs.

The Radeon RX card is going to be faster in gaming according to Raja from the Vega AMA he did.

They have it on their S series server GPUs and some FirePros now too a think. It'll be included in Vega WX most likely, I just want a cheaper card for testing VMware Horizon and SR-IOV.

Except the first two have been crippled since the original Titan cards so it's really only a gaming card now.

Honestly I think it's in a far weirder spot. You might be able to get a Radeon RX Vega card, and a Radeon Pro card like the WX 7100 for the price of a Frontier Edition.
Better gaming, and better rendering/encoding with the Vega + Pro; and similar compared to the FE.
Although we'll need proper comprehensive tests before we can decide.

 

If the Frontier Edition is really good in gaming as well, it might actually suit my needs; but since it's not using Gaming drivers, or Radeon Pro drivers; it's hard to see where it sits; and will perform compared to the other two.

Yea I agree that is the card they need to be comparing it to but you can see the results of what Nivida has done to Titan, one of the tests it was ~80% slower (Solidworks).

Well since being disruptive seems to be the aim of the game for AMD it wouldn't be a stretch to think that they're trying to force Nvidia into selling their full GP102 dies to consumers or provide actual workstation optimised drivers for it, much like this card is supposed to.

I will however, give the benefit to OpenCL because in applications I work with (Caffe-OpenCL, Torch, Theono on Ubuntu), OpenCL is just as fast as CUDA and scales better to 2+ GPUs. 

 

So I really hope this launch goes well for AMD, as I am really looking forward to happily replacing my FirePros if these cards turn out to be any good. 

What windows based system uses NVlink that it will matter?

Isn't 1900+ a very heavy overclocks?

 

Looking at aftermarket 1080Ti's they're range from 1540-1680Mhz for boost clocks.

 

With anything over that being a manual overclock that's rather hefty.

And the Titan Xp was probably running at 1800-1900MHz, because the reference cooler is crap. Take it as you will, but this comparison may have been between a thermal throttling Titan Xp and a Vega card running at full speed -_-

i don't think the drivers for gaming are there yet, because vega changes many things in the architecture, like where some of the cache is, this time around making the driver is probably harder than before

1900+, yes. 1800-1900 isn't really high for a Titan Xp. BTW, I just fact checked what I said and the reference cooler on the Titan Xp makes it run at 1600-1700MHz, which is VERY low....
