OnePlus 3T vs LG G6: 2016 vs 2017?

Which smartphone should I get?

  1. 1. Which smartphone should I get?

    • OnePlus 3T (64 GB, Gunmetal) [1569 MYR/ 365 USD]
    • LG G6 (64 GB, Astro Black) [1839 MYR/ 430 USD]

I'm planning on getting a new smartphone after I sold my OnePlus 3 to my sister. Right now, the OnePlus 3T costs 1569 MYR (365 USD) and the LG G6 costs 1839 MYR (430 USD) on my local online store. Here are their pros and cons which I've thought of:

OnePlus 3T

[PROS]
- Has a whopping 6 GB of LPDDR4 RAM

- Larger 3400 mAh battery capacity

- Infinite contrast ratio of AMOLED panel

- High resolution 16 MP rear camera

- High resolution 16 MP front-facing camera

- Super-fast Dash Charging

- Near stock Android experience

- Durable Gorilla Glass 4

[CONS]

- No Ingress Protection certification

- No support for MicroSD expandability

- Relatively small f/2.0 aperture of rear camera

- Single rear camera

- Front 16 MP camera only captures at 1080p

- Android version probably only up to 8 (Android O)

LG G6

[PROS]

- Has IP68 Ingress Protection certification

- Has support for MicroSD expandability

- Large, f/1.8 aperture of primary rear camera for good low-light shots

- Wide-angle capability of secondary rear camera

- Dual rear cameras

- Highly customizable settings in stock camera app

- Android version probably up to 9 (Android P)

- Large, 5.7" IPS LCD display

- High density 1440p screen at 564 PPI

- Has support for HDR content

- Support for USB On-The-Go

- Support for FM radio

- Smooth, flush design all around

[CONS]

- Higher resolution display cripples battery life

- Smaller 3300 mAh battery capacity

- Only 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM

- Finite contrast ratio of LCD display

- No capacitive buttons increases time taken to switch between apps

- Customized UI means longer time taken when receiving OS updates

- Relatively low resolution of front-facing camera (5 MP)

- Relatively old and less durable Gorilla Glass 3

I really want the LG G6 mainly due to the dual cameras and the IP68 certification, but at the same time, I'll be losing out on the capacitive buttons which I really love on the OnePlus 3T. Also, the OnePlus 3T is slightly cheaper than the LG G6. In the performance category, they both have the Snapdragon 821 SoC but I noticed the LG G6 is a tad slower due to having heavier animations. I also notice that the LG G6 takes better photos than the OnePlus 3T, especially in low light. In case you're wondering, I'm not considering the OnePlus 5 due to the lack of any stabalization on all modes except for 1080p30 and the front-facing camera, which really sucks. Plus, it starts at around 2300 MYR (530 USD) for the 64 GB model which is totally out of my budget. So, which smartphone should I get? Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd go for the 3t, Unless you take pictures alot, or in low light situations, and I know IP68 is cool but its not every day you're near water so I would just grab the fluid oxyOS over it any day.

That's the thing. I don't take pictures very often but when I do, I want really good images and the IP68 on the LG G6 will let me take cool snaps such as those semi-underwater shots. By the way, do the dual camera setup on the G6 perform better than the 3T? :)

The wide angle and low light performance is noticeably better.

The 5.7inch display makes it 6inch phone, make sure ur hands are prepared for it if u choose LG. Id go for the 3T though, especially when ur not a FREE ALL THE RAM ALL THE TIME guy :)

Few more things to note that might affect your decision:

The G6 has a taller screen that takes over what used to be bezels. It isn't any wider than your regular 5.5" phone. Its resolution being even higher than 1440p, is IPS which is terrible for SOT, graphics performance and responsiveness.

G6 has a glass back, will probs break before you even get the chance to make underwater shots. Get a case to hide your beautifully crafted phone. IP68 is protection in fresh water. If you go sea diving your phone will still get a quick death.

If you need lots of storage for god knows what, over 128GB, then G6 is choice. The 3T has only up to 128GB internal storage.

G6 has USB is 3.1 as opposed to 2.0, has NFC and superior 32bit audio. Fingerprint sensor is on the back, which is deal for when you holding the phone, but a hassle if placed on the desk.

6GB of RAM is not really an advantage. 4GB is still plenty for what most people use. The G6 having longer update support means nothing when manufacturers and carriers are assholes that withhold updates. Both phones will get Android O and for years to come, lots of custom roms on XDA.

Also keep in mind the 3T's Dash charge is not a rebranded Qualcom quick charge. It is proprietary and requires specifically a Dash charger AND dash charging cable (yes the pins are not the same in the cable) 3T will still charge with regular chargers and cables though, albeit without any form of fast charging.

To be honest, I've already considered all of the facts you've stated and the OnePlus 3T seems to be the better device. But OMG I really want to have a spin at the G6's dual 13 MP cameras which are quite superior over the 3T's basic f/2.0 16 MP one. Can't. Friggin. Decide. ?

I really like the big screen. Its also higher resolution. Waterproofing and dual camera are also nice to have. Just feel its a more premium phone and i would choose it not just over the 3T but also the One Plus 5 despite the 5 having a more powerful processor

The main worry I'd have, is if the G6 suffers the same issues that the previous couple of generations of LG phones have had. It also gets worse battery life than most flagship devices. While the features are quite nice, I'd have to hand this one to the OnePlus. I hope LG proves this generation that it's phones are free of issues, the V30 is looking to be quite a nice unit.

With an 18:9 ratio and with no chin or forehead, the phone is tiny. It's as wide as a 5.2" phone, and shorter in height.

For a normal day shoot with good light its not much different. But worth considering the better camera if you take lots of pictures.

Ofc its not a consideration for occasions like going on a tour or holiday - you'd be taking so many pictures that you should have a dedicated camera at hand.

With the LG it's a little different, since one of the cameras is wide angle.

You really think a dedicated camera is better when on vacation? I find higher end camera phones produce pictures just as good as a pocket camera.

width doesnt change the fact that it will be harder for you to reach the top with one hand, if ur hands are small :)

Sony Xperia XZs: 146 x 72 x 8.1 mm

LG G6: 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm

Hmm. Look at that. it's actually narrower than a phone with a 5.2" screen. For further comparison:

Considering the overall size of the phone is small, it's much easier. That's the whole reason they moved to that aspect ratio. I don't think many peoples hands are that small.

Actually, if your hand isn't as outstretched you have more reach with your thumb.

So, it's still true.

Keep in mind that the g6 has certain region locked features. The g6 plus (h870dsu) has all of them enabled except for the wireless charging.

I've scrapped the idea of getting either and I'm planning on getting the OnePlus 5 64 GB (Slate Grey) once it dips below RM2K or wait for the upcoming LG V30. I heard good stuff about it. :)

LG v30 is going to be expensive, I've seen £540 on a story about it (lower than I expected but still not in one plus 3/LG G6 territory)

I expect prices similar to the V20 at launch.

ohhh .. guess im gonna go with 3T, OP 5 does not have much upgrade for the price increase from 3T (wanted either wide angle lens/front facing speaker/water resistance but sadly OP5 does not deliver any of these) and it gonna take a while for the price dip. V30 will be at a price that i would not consider as affordable phone, so gonna pass as well. Ohya, you mentioned there's store selling at 1.5k for OP 3T, mind to share the store link or name? Thanks in advance
