can someone explain to me why gcn cards are selling like a god church?

look i know that gcn cards are better, but could someone explain why? what about the shaders makes them better?

is it because each of the processing units inside pool their data into a cache which is sent to a raster, allowing for draw calls to be accepted more frequently?

is it because it has a shorter pipeline?
or is it just because they have more cores at a lower price point?

I'd like to say it's the bandwidth and core architecture that can operate asynchronously, but I don't know as I've never looked into any mining program.

Probs. AFAIK, NV had to resort to a scheduler for asynchronous workloads and such, the equivalent of hyperthreading. AMD can actually multitask more effectively when called upon. 

 

Sadly, also one of the reasons for the - at best - on par DX11 performance, but with vastly disproportionate power consumption, as the hardware support for parallel workloads was just sitting there twiddling thumbs in that case.

 

Could be talking out of my posterior, as it's mostly differences in architecture I've picked up over the years, and not info from Electrical Engineering classes. But yes, greater capacity to operate asynchronously as was mentioned.

nVidia's architecture's performance is more reliant on the drivers for application specific optimizations, GCN is the true general purpose GPU

nvidia's performance mostly comes out of extreme architecture and driver optimization, where AMD's approach usually is "brute forcing it", making their architecture more efficient at "unexpected purposes".

 

this was also pretty visible when DX12 happened, although that number may be tweaked a bit due to the limited number of benchmarks that were actually in place there.
