Slow game download, but high speed test.

Hello forum,

 

I have this problem with slow download speeds. 
For example, i'm downloading a game on steam, it jumps around, usually between 20-40 kbps.

Peak is around 72.6 Mbps, and disk usage is 57.6kb/s, sometimes double that.

 

When taking a speed test, i get a upload speed on 96 mb/s, and a download speed on 64 mb/s. 
How can i have so slow downloads, when so high speed tests? 

I'm running an SSD for windows, and a HDD for the games.

EDIT:

It seems that the issue, is caused by steam download servers. Most likely because of steam summer sale.

Your limited by the servers bandwidth. You may have high speed internet, but a game server has to host many downloads at a time. You'll get a fraction of the available bandwidth for your download so the server can still provide service to others requests.

I'd try fiddling with the steam settings for a start; check download limits, change the download server location, and if it still doesn't work, try copying a file to the HDD to see how that goes.

It makes alot of sense: 
More users downloading games results in more load on the servers. 
I switched server from Denmark to Germany, Hamburg, which has fixed the issue. 
I guess the Hamburg server is better equipped to handle the load. 

Next time i'll download at early morning instead.

There are tons of servers, so if it's bottlenecking your bandwith, try switching to a server, where it's night time :). It doesn't mess with the game's performance, because you switch just the download server location and not the game server location. I'm always using a US server even though i live in middle Europe.

As far as i am aware, all games are downloaded from the same servers, so yes, it should be the same with all games.

not necessarily. i can download 6-7 games in a row with full speed, yet some games like rust which i dont play will a lot of the time update very very slowly.
