Corrupted partition: what should I do to recover my files?

One of my HDDs was behaving a bit oddly few months ago. And the day I was going to perform a backup, Windows prompted me to do a repair on the drive. It was completed successfully but the next time I plugged it in again, only the partition name was shown. I left it aside for a couple of months but now I want to recover it.

What is the surefire way to recover the whole partition? Should I create a image before attempting anything? How should I do that?

I ran a few recovery programs to see if all my files and folders are there and they are. I was also planning to use TestDisk but it seems a bit complicated.

I'm wishing there's a way to do it without paying.

First thing is to make a image with ddrescue. Then use a program like test disk to repair to image or use photorec to get files.

If you really want the data and want the best chances of getting the data send it to a data recovery service.

Is there another option that's compatible with Windows?

I've seen your video about ddrescue btw. Very informative.

So i hunted around for a program like ddrescue on windows, and found this http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/

It will make a image and skip over errors.

It worked. TestDisk is now analyzing cylinders on the cloned drive.

Problem: TestDisk does not recognize my partition.

It did a quick and a long test and couldn't find any partitions. It auto selects as "none" and when I select Intel/PC partition it shows this:

I have no idea how this works. Windows clearly knows it's there.
