Could my refresh rate be causing my computer to crash?

underscore3

Hi I have a 144hz display ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q and I have been experiencing computer crashes randomly when I am playing pubg or running both furmark and prime95 blend. I have done a ton of trouble shooting so far and I am about at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. I have a theory but have no idea if it is valid. I have been playing skyrim (no crashes in this game just pubg) and I if my monitor is set to anything  above 60 hz the game breaks so in the settings in nvidia control panel I set it to 60 hz and proceeded to forget about this setting.  My display also has a button to change the refresh rate between 60/120/144 hz. Could having a setting in Nvidia control panel and the setting on my monitor be causing me to crash?

refresh rate is independent of the pc hardware, so i'd say no. Your issue ia somewhere else

Could it be a G-Sync issue?

While G-Sync does come with some issues, I never experienced anything that would crash my game or PC.

To my knowledge its only both but its really inconsistent when it happens sometimes it takes 10 min sometimes I have run it a couple hours with 0 issues. I am fairly sure its not a heat issue as I have run prime 95 small fft for about 2 hours and things didn't get too toasty topping out about 70C. I have run memtest 8 passes with 0  errors.

Also when I say crash it just like totally restarts no bsod just click restart and the only thing in event viewer of note is the critical error for kernel power 42.

I have a ton of errors in event viewer and am having a hard time finding a good way to fix them some things are talking about messing with registries and I am not totally comfortable with that.  If it is something like a windows issue would a clean reinstall take care of it?

Also I have the sinking suspicion that if it is a hardware issue it is the psu with how random it is and how it does not seem to be really easily recreated. I ordered a psu tester off amazon if the crashes keep happening after my potential reinstall.

Could be software related, in which case the reinstall would help only until you reinstall whatever software causes the issue. What does Event Viewer say caused the shut downs? Any program or directory at fault?

@ARikozuM

It is the same critical error I am getting every time. The other errors I am getting are distributed com errors (ID: 10010) and App (event ID 5973) errors having to do with windows store, as well as some Perfib errors (ID: 1023 and 1008). I linked a past bin to the details on the critical error.

Event 41 is usually associated with power when asked. I'd see if you can reproduce it on your current PSU and then borrow another to do the same. Otherwise, I'd reinstall Windows.

Do you overclock at all?

I don't atm I have had enough trouble with it crashing at stock.

This is the second PSU I have had in there. I RMA'ed the first one when I first started trouble shooting seeing the error 41 so I was hoping that this was not the problem. I dont have another PSU to test but I did get a PSU tester that will be here in a couple of days to see if the 12, 5, and 3.3 rails are all putting out the correct voltages. One other question this has kinda been a long list of problems that I think I solve and end up not really having solved. The initial problem I had was that the bios that came preinstalled on my Mobo was set to a super aggressive voltage by default (1.35 v) could that have damaged my processor? Then it was fallowed up by instability caused by having XMP on now this.

The motherboard is also responsible for power delivery. I would contact your manufacturer to get an RMA. Let them know that you've tested every component and that you've narrowed it down to the motherboard.

Hi. Did you manage to solve the problem? I have similar issues with nvidia and 144Hz AOC monitor. With amd card it works fine.
