Samsung Galaxy S4 in 2017

Fellow Techies,

I currently have an Samsung Galaxy S7 and I love it now (I solved all my issues), I am looking at giving my mother my S7 and buying myself a S4. What are your thoughts? I can get a mint S4 for $90 USD. I am not a huge user, I go on youtube, google maps, emails, internet browsing, some letgo, etc. I am not into social media (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc). I text a bit but nothing serious. I would rather have the older phone so mamma is happy (hopefully you know the saying). I work construction during the summer as well as odd jobs during the school year that range on physical activity. If I have any doubts about the safety of my phone I put in the truck or in a bag. I use an otterbox phone case and I generally am careful with my device. Could I stay happy with the S4?

the biggest issues you'll have are the battery and the bloatware (assuming you don't root). I used an s3 for a while and it was a total pain in the arse to deal with, mostly due to the battery crapping itself by noon, and that's on power saving and with wifi/bt/etc off.

ofc it'll be significantly slower than the s7 and the data/wifi will also be slower

You do bring a good point. I would get a new battery if I saw where it was going to be an issue. I don't have a problem of waiting three seconds longer. I don't do anything that requires instant response. The only time it bugs me is typing. I can handle slower website loading time.

Bloatware wise, the S7 is loaded with crap I never use. At least 7 apps that I don't use.

typing speed shouldn't be too big of an issue if the s3 is any measure of that, as long as you're used to the smaller keyboard and its style (i can barely type on anything under 5" because large thumbs. I miss my 6" phone :( )

I doubt that the S4 is getting regular Android Security patches anymore, so security may be a concern as well.

Wait until you see what the S4 has. Just 7 apps that you don't use and can't uninstall seems like a dream. I have it myself, and if you uninstall all you can uninstall, and use a launcher like Nova, it can work fairly well, but I am constantly running up to the storage limit (16gb version) so make sure you get one with a larger capacity.

What is Nova? I keep a lot of data on micro sd card so I should be ok. Thanks.

I think your best option would be to buy a cheap Moto E/G smartphone. It has updated specs and security patches get pushed through regularly. I currently am using my Moto G4 Play and it's a great phone, hell it has lasted longer than the flagships I've bought in the past.

I am still using my Galaxy S2 but I don't use it much and I don't play games. I consider upgrading but I am too lazy for now

By the way which model of S4? I have a late international model that uses the SD800 (GT-I9506) but the regular ones most people had was the GT-I9500 that uses an SD600 or Exynos equivalent. Those are definitely way slower than an S7.

 

Not gonna be a nice experience unless you install a custom rom. Or unless you only use it for simple stuff.

All I know is the GSM model.
