sata 2 vs sata 3 theoretical speeds

I needed a sata data cable asap so I went to a local computer shop. They didn't have sata 3 for some reason but said I wouldn't notice a difference between sata 2 and 3 because in reality they would perform similar which didn't sound correct to me. Is this really true? I got charged 6 dollars for it which in itself was a crime. 

Unsure what power supply to pick?

If it's not an SSD you won't notice a difference because hard drive speeds aren't faster than sata 2.

 

BTW sata refers to the port on the motherboard and drive, there is no such thing as a sata 2 or sata 3 cable. It is just a sata cable.

Interesting. How come it seems some sata cables are advertised as a "sata 3 cable"? Just a marketing thing?

SATA cables are just SATA cables. Nothing in the cable changed between revisions. 

 

If you're using an HDD, you won't notice much of a difference except in rare cases. If you're using an SSD, you'll notice lower latency with SATA 1/2, but won't have the throughput of SATA 3.

Yeah there is no different cable standard, a sata cable will work for sata 1 or 2 or 3.

What speeds you get will depends on the motherboard and drive.
