The first and most important information is that there at least two SKUs for miners being prepared by NVIDIA. Allegedly there’s a P104-100 card in the making, based on GTX 1080/1070 design. We don’t know yet how many CUDA cores are enabled, but since P104-100 is said to be paired with GDDR5X memory it may as well be GTX 1080. These cards are said to be more efficient than normal GeForce cards in cryptocurrency mining (~30 to ~10% depending on SKU).

So the manufacturers are joining the market where they see the money and also allow normal consumers to buy other products without being gobbled up by them miners

EDIT: The "MINING Series" is now up on ASUS page, the mining cards are 1060 and 470 under the names MINING-P106-6G and MINING-RX470-4G

As long as the prices normalize in the consumer/enthusiast market for normal GPUs I'm fine with whatever they want to sell people.  

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Frankly, I'm not so sure this will pan out the way they think, unless the prices are significantly less.  One of the "advantages" to miners using standard cards, is that they can sell them when they're done with them.  These cards have no resale value, due to a lack of output.

More efficient = downclocked?

 

You can do this with a regular GPU to gain efficieny, estecially with polaris. Anyways, I think the cards are fine due to the demand, but the whole mining hipe is insane.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

I just think its cool that a mining card from a regular vendor is even coming out. Would like to see them perform well both for miners and for gamers actually being able to get their hands on cards they want without overpaying so much over MSRP.

Okay, wait a minute.  So there are GPU chips out there to mount on these PCBs, but not enough chips to satisfy demand as normal graphics cards?  In what way could this possibly alleviate the stress placed on the general consumer because of the scalping of graphics cards to crypto miners?  What's the game being played here, and what are the corners being cut to make this happen?  There's a piece to this puzzle I don't get, but I can smell its stink.

the only thing that can help this is amd ramping up its silicon production nothing else will help 

plus this cards have less value to miners as their resale value will be super low (people will know that the card was used for mining and normal gamers can't use them to game because of the lack of display connectivity )

There may be minor defect chips which are ok for computation but do not meet the full requirements for a consumer gaming card. This could allow these lower grade chips to be reused. Dunno if this will be a significant number.

There may be secondary uses. For example, at least on the AMD side the headless card might be paired with a regular one in crossfire. On nvidia side, we all wanted a dedicated physx processor right? :)

 

Also the distributed computing community is keeping an eye on what happens next, as there are many who want to expand their farms at low cost after the mining bubble bursts. They're not doing it for income, and just want to buy them as cheap as possible.

Can you still run these on a Razor Core for gaming using the laptop display?

Does mining really work the PCI-E bandwidth?  If not, would it be possible to make the cards have direct USB-C external, rather than PCI-E, then you could potentially run many more cards per computer node.

Logic would say a card used for mining also has little to no resale value.

When the Ethereum bubble bursts, you're going to see tons of second-hand cards on Ebay that were "never used for mining". 

With a gaming card a seller can try to pull that kind of trick, with a mining-specific card it's going to be much harder to fool potential buyers.

i think its a pretty good idea. they need to stress test their GPUs and mining put a lot of load on GPU. So they accomplish two things by mining, stress test and some extra cash. Genius idea!

That's not a bad idea at all really. I was really just trying to say the person I quoted made no sense that Asus would buy someone else's cards to mine.

 

Idk if mining would be a good stability test or if it misses some aspects of the card. It would be interesting to find out though and definitely benificial to Asus if they did

ethereum will not burst it will fade away by design as they change to another method of maintaining the network
