i7 7700k vs i5 7600k for gaming

So, I'm looking to buy a CPU upgrade soon. I'm debating on the 7600k or the 7700k, I'm not entirely sure. At my local Microcenter the i5 7600k is $200 USD. The 7700k is $280 USD. Is the $80 worth it? I'm going to buy an MSI Gaming M3 Motherboard. I currently have a GTX 1060 from MSI, I don't want any bottlenecking.

I'd get an R5 1600 over an i5, but the 7700k is the gaming king.

You wont bottleneck. Have you got cooling already? Because you'll need decent cooling on KabyLake. I'd go 7700k over an i5, but if you don't already have cooling, get the i5 and a decent cooler. Or even the above recommended CPU, I personally don't follow much of AMD, so I don't have much to say about them.

Ryzen 1600. i5s are garbage these days as games are becoming more multithreaded and now that we have competition from AMD.

Probably benefit more from what these guys are saying regarding Ryzen. Google and ask around regarding comparisons, and make your decision of what resolution/games you want to play.

The i5 will be enough, that is a good pricing, I'd still try finding the cheapest possible z270 board even if micro-atx to pair with it as it isn't worth spending much on an i5... a 212 evo and OC it with it, it'll be considerably cheap and allow the GTX 1060 to work on its full potential.

 

But do understand this CPU is a dead pathway, any better GPU to be used to its full potential will require better processor and the motherboard might or not support coffee lake so it could be pretty dead already.

 

I wish I could just recommend the 7700k but it will be under-used for a gaming rig with a 1060.

You still can. For the usual $110, it isn't worth it except for those few cases where the HT makes a difference. For $80, OP could spend the leftover $30 on faster memory or a nicer board.

the r5 1600 or i7 7700k. the i5 doesn't cut it anymore. basic multitasking suffers if you play AAA games that utilize core. and to be honest I'm not a heavy multi tasker just some chrome tabs,discord, and some programs. the benchmarks you see rarely true in use case scenario because they are clean/fresh windows reinstall. This is why i switched from an i5 to an i7 later down the road. please do not do the same mistake as me.

Can't believe people are still suggesting 4 core CPU's with no hyperthreading...  Get a Ryzen 1600 (1600x if you don't overclock) with a cheap b350 you'll save money and be much happier in the long run.

Ryzen 5 1600/X depending on if you overclock. Your GTX 1060 won't need a good CPU to run at it's max potential. i5 needs an expensive motherboard to overclock. Where you can get B350 motherboards for less than 80$.
