I want to use the screen out of an old macbook.

TechSquidTV

I want to take the LCD out of this old A1278 MacBook and turn it into an external screen. I've seen it done it with other screens but I will need a display driver board and I could use some help identifying the correct one.

I think you need the model number of the display itself, have you removed it yet?

I was trying to get it via the model of the computer. But I can finish the disassembly, I was trying to reserve that for when I have the controller board.

Part Number for a MacBook A1278's Display is 661-5868, which uses an LVDS cable, (see https://smile.amazon.com/661-5868-LCD-Screen-LVDS-Cable/dp/B01BQQMGXA).
As far as controller boards, finding the cable that will connect to the display is going to be fairly difficult, but let your eBay seller know and hopefully they can find it for you.
