Antique Personal Computer Upgrade

Hey, my friend owns one of these - http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/pc/QC4001.htm and I suggested upgrading it, then I found out the psu wattage (230w).

So, the q6600 is still a 'decent' cpu which when paired with a lower end gpu can give pretty ok performance and based on his needs it would be great for him. He wants the PC for schoolwork/general browsing and casual/esports gaming. (He'd be happy for anything as the base PC is a huge upgrade over his crappy celeron laptop.

We could get a 4 gb stick of ram to replace one of the 512mb sticks for £8 and buy a 1050/750ti all dependant on if the psu would provide enough power. (Don't really want to get a 1050 so it doesn't matter if it blows up).

Thanks in advance :)

If its quite cheap go for it! I have a E8600 pc and it still works great for most things. Would still be on it if I didnt need a far more powerful machine for vms in school

What's your definition of ancient, a Pentium 4 Northwood? :P

But on the topic at hand, a 1050 would be the fastest thing you could cram in it without really bottlenecking shit or running out of juice, and as for RAM you might wanna get a set of 2GB sticks, but I can't remember how much the ol' Q6600 benefits from dual channel (and I can't be arsed to test it).

I could, it has 3gb as is in 2x1gb, 2x512mb. I thought if I just added a 4gb stick it would give 6.5gb which would be alright and the cheaper the better tbh. The mobo only supports up to 8gb so I could do 4x2gb/2x4gb which would work.

Make sure the Mobo supports 4gb on one slot, it probably won't by the way you are describing it. I had a core duo PC and I bought ram for no reason since it didn't support 4gb in 2 slots, it needed 2gb in all for slots for the full 8gb

I used to use a 2.4GHz hyperthreaded Northwood before I got my current PC. :P And there were plans of getting a dual-P3 board and a pair of CPUs (1GHz I think) from someone I know but then life happened and I have no idea if we'll be able to anytime soon. :/

Some of the old 775 boards are picky about supporting 4GB sticks so it's honestly a bit of a gamble going that route.

yep.... Found that out the hard way for me :P generally you need to go with 2GB sticks unless its one of the high end thirdparty mobos.

I lucked out and got my dual P3 system at a thrift store for $20 :) dual 1.4 GHz cpus, 4 scsi drives with a raid controller, 2 GB RAM. My 2.8 Northwood is OC'd right now to over 3.4GHz :) Want to get one of the high end 3+ GHz ones and OC the shit out of it but my mobo is failing and need to replace that first of ocing wont be a thing at all :( They are surprisingly hard to find for a decent price nowadays

Literally I would have gotten the board, CPUs, a Promise Ultra100 RAID card, and 4GB? of RAM literally for shipping. That's it. :( amdepressodandneedanespresso
