Apple's iMac Pro to use Intel Server grade 'Purley' with an ARM co-processor

The site claims that the iMac Pro will be powered by Intel’s next-generation server-grade Skylake-EX and Skylake-EP processors, citing information available within firmware files from the macOS High Sierra beta. Furthermore, the files reportedly indicate that the iMac Pro will use Intel’s server-class LGA3647 socket, as opposed to its desktop-class LGA2066 socket

 

What this means, if accurate, is that the iMac Pro would offer server-level Xeon processors, codenamed Purley rather than Skylake or Kaby Lake processors that use the LGA2066 socket.

 

This would mean that the new iMac Pro would be using truly server grade platform rather than the new Core X series of chips from Intel.

The report also adds that there may be an ARM co-processor as a Secure Enclave although Apple didn't mention anything about Touch ID during the keynote

 

As for the credibility of this report, the same source did indeed report the specs of the refreshed iMacs back in April

 

I guess Apple seems to be on a quest to put balls to the walls hardware in a pretty attractive AiO chassis. Also, I think it would be fantastic if Apple actually uses their AX chips to offload lighter tasks, saving alot of power and potentially operating even when the computer is turned off for like updates, but I guess this makes more sense in laptops than desktops

Well, in a way that kinda justifies the cost since those motherboards and processors must be insanely expensive and almost half the price of the machine alone.

Apple had always used server hardware. The main issues being upgradability, and frequency of hardware updates.

OK, we need again someone who will complain that iMac Pro is overpriced xD. My opinion from the start is that iMac Pro is reasonably priced machine. Yes, it is super expensive, but for the features and specs you get it actually isn't.

The issue is that based on all the information so far you'll wind up needing to buy a professional monitor on the side *anyways* because the iMac pro's display doesn't seem to be anywhere near broadcast quality from what little they've said, which makes me question the all-in-one form factor for it.

 

And god knows anything over the $5000 unit is going to go up at a frankly ridiculous pace because Apple.

Except the Surface Studio isn't any better >.> Lower quality specs all around. About the only thing that the Surface Studio has in it's favor is pen support, which granted is a big benefit.

As long as I can freely and easily change out the motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU... Etc. just like a normal desktop, then we have no problems. :)

What does that sentence even mean? The iMac 5k STILL has the best 5k display on the market and this one will be even better. What more can you ask of them? And actually cost for the machine is near 3500-4000 and now it uses and even more balls to the wall server level stuff. Excited to see where this goes even though I'm for sure not buying one.

The best 5k display doesn't really say much.

 

Compared to professional 1080p or even 4k broadcast monitors from the likes of Sony the difference in colour space and accuracy is night and day.

 

Compared to professional workstation monitors like a Cintiq, again it loses on colour space, brightness, static contrast, and pen support which is a deal breaker for huge parts of the industry.

I doubt pen support is a huge deal because drawing on a huge digital vertical surface has never been a thing and that's where Apple positions it's iPad Pro lineup. Btw the surface studio did get horrendous review about the surface pen when reviewed by professional artists while the iPad review has been overwhelming positive and can only get better with reduced delay in the newer iPads with 120 Hz displays

500 nits of brightness is literally half of what's required by an LCD to support UHD Premium or any of the other HDR certifications which means it's useless as an editing display for HDR content since it's not rated to accurately create the brightness range required.

 

So it supports the extended DCI-P3 colour space. Okay. What percentage of that does it accurately reproduce? What percentage of rec2020 does it cover?

 

Pro grade monitors have supported 10-bit colour for what... 4 years now? Cintiqs have had it since at least what? 2012? Sony's broadcast displays have supported it since they came out in mid/late 2011.

 

If "drawing on a huge vertical surface" broke pen use on displays cintiqs wouldn't be a thing >.>

The Surface Studio is not designed for high end professional use. No Xeon. No ECC. Crappy colour reproduction.

I thought this was a given, I don't see how it could be any other way given how it was presented and what apple generally does - after all there's no point to x299 if you can't cool it, let alone overclock it.

 

I'm curious to see what the ARM coprocessor will be doing, I also assume to use it developers will need to use ad-hoc APIs. Nevertheless if it does anything cool it may be nice to get something like that on an expansion card in the future.

The problem with imacs and 10bit has always been that they used consumer gpus in them and those didn't support 10bit. Now that they finally have a pro grade gpu they fail on the brightness... photographers and video makers must be pulling their hair out at this point

Wasn't it 8 cores? I think they said it in the original announcement. I could be wrong though.

I have no idea what they'd use it for other than secure enclave...maybe Metal workload (draw call/compute call) generation? An onboard iOS development platform?

 

Realistically though I think the ARM CPU is just their secure enclave.

 

The 8-cores bit was the minimum number of cores of the Xeon E5 in it, which is the Xeon in the base $5000 model.

All the 4k and 5k iMacs, as well as the Mac Pro (trashcan model) have supported 10-bit colour output since El Capitan (late 2015).

 

The Mac Pro even allowed 10-bit editing iirc.

Ok, how many monitors are out there supporting UHD Premium Standard. All I could find was a dell and Samsung's announcement a few days ago that they will be releasing one

The 2015 5K iMacs has again great reviews for siplay accuracy. I couldn't find the percentage of the above, but you can check it out yourself

I talked about iPads specifically for drawing, so my answer will be in respect to that

 

Crappy ARM? Not really. New iPad Pros are pretty powerful with their AX chips. There's alot of powerful photo editing apps available in the App store that can satisfy atleast 80% of the professional editors out there

I don't think you need ECC. iOS does perform well

 

Crappy colour reproduction? Displaymate and Anandtech gave a glowing review for the iPad's near perfect LCD display. 102 percent DCI-P3 coverage

It's not a standard. It's a certification. The Sony broadcast monitors I've mentioned a number of times now vastly exceed the requirements for UHD Premium OLED certification. That's why they're one of the few screens used as master monitors for HDR content.

Compared to other consumer monitors? Sure. Compared to high end industrial and professional monitors? Not even close. Apple didn't announce how much of P3 their new display covers. Hence my skeptecism. For high end editing it doesn't matter if you cover part of DCI-P3 if you only cover 60% of it. Until we see actual numbers on colour gamut, you're not going to convince me it's useful in any way for editing.

Can Pixar run their rendering engines on an iPad? Can I run solidworks on an iPad? Can people doing video mastering and encoding run premier pro or other in-house solutions on an iPad. That's my point. This is supposed to be a professional system, not a prosumer system.

ECC has nothing to do with performance. It's to do with memory errors. ECC ram typically performs slightly slower than non-ECC ram. If you're spending 3 days rendering a scene in a professional setting, you're going to want ECC memory period.

From my understanding ECC is slower, but because the cpu doesn't have to run a process again to fic the ram error the overall job is quicker.   Please correct me if this isn't right.   

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
