Is 16gb of ram necessary?

I have 8 gb of ram and so far I havent had any issues with it but I want to know If in any situation I could lose performance with only 8.

Not really, I have 12gb of RAM for the worst case that I go over my 8GB to be on the safe side but that very rarely happens. Or if you're using RAM intensive programs then I'd highly recommend upgrading.

if you like a gaming-oriented example of when i used up more than 8gb ram, i started playing a high-VRAM-usage game with chrome and spotify in the background, and consumed 10-12gb ram.

ram is one of those things were if you have enough it almost doesnt matter if you have more of it, so unless you see 90% plus usage in the task manager you don't need more

I downgraded to 8gb temporarily and it's infuriatingly limiting for someone used to 32 or 16gb.  My baseline RAM use is around 12gb, often spiking into 15.

As of now, 4 of 8, I would guess it uses more when im gaming and I like to leave a lot of stuff opened when I'm playing a game so I would imagine I need more.

More RAM is never a bad thing but it can be entirely useless in some cases.  The operating system will reserve extra RAM and appear in use.  Applications like chrome, or AAA games will do that too.  It's like extra cache for your system, but it's not always going to offer noticeable improvements.

 

I would say if you already have 8gb, and it doesn't feel slow, stick with it for now.  If you're building new, I personally think an i5 or Ryzen 5 or better would benefit from 16gb.

Sure, depending on what you're doing. If you're not having any issues with RAM usage with your current setup and you're not planning on changing usage in a way that would consume more, you're probably fine with 8.

I sandbox using virtual machines - specially when in linux - at times running 3 os at one time. Than it can get pretty RAM hungry even before starting any productivity software.

 

What you can take away from his is: It really depends on what you do. If you run clean Win 10 and don't multitask ... (having 10 taps on chrome is not multitasking) ... than you could get away with 6GB ... where I struggle with 32GB at times ...

My recommendation is keep an eye on your usage and if you ran out, ran out to store and get another stick.

Premiere on it's own takes up about 11gbs with the timeline loaded and AE will save the preview in the RAM so adding effects easily tops it off. It basically makes the RAM a RAM disk for insane speeds
