RAM vs Ryzen

Go to solution Solved by iRileyx,

It will depend on the motherboard, you'll have to check their compatibility too.

Will this RAM be compatible for a Ryzen 1500x cpu? https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/RAM/DDR4/Dual+Channel+3000MHz/16GB+Corsair+DDR4+Blue+Vengeance+LPX+3000MHz+Memory+Kit+for+Skylake+2x8GB?productId=67719

Im not sure if it will because it says it's for skylake which is intel isn't it?

They don't have it listed on their compaitilibty list.

Most likely it would still work, just not at the 3000mhz its rated for.

can you recommend a 16gb ram at around 3000mhz that isnt super expensive that would work with the mobo and cpu?

Corsair vengeance LPX 3000 works across them all I think. It worked for me since March, there are more options now that AGESA 1006 is released but I imagine the cheaper boards didn't get this update yet.

Asrock AB350m has worked for almost a few weeks now since their AGESA 1.0.0.6 updated BIOS came out. Mine is working fien at 3066Mhz. Haven't tried higher yet.

Just FYI the difference between 2133 mhz ram and 3200 mhz ram is marginal in performance.

By marginal I mean:

- 1-3 fps in 99% of games. I saw only one game when it bumped by 10fps (from 70 to 80fps)

- around 1.7% in other workloads.

Then again. I think you won't be buying a 2133mhz sticks, but something like 2400 or 2666mhz if you want to save money, so the difference will be even lower.

Summary: Everything above 2666mhz is not worth by in my opinion. Everything above 3000mhz is just not worth it. Unless you buy for the looks or swag :)

Was this measured on Ryzen? I'm asking because on those CPUs the "Infinity Fabric" connecting CCXs runs at ram speed, so as a hack to increase that speed, people try to get faster ram.

Hey, yes it was measured on Ryzen, I found a video with some benchmarks although I don't agree with the summary the guy has. He states that the result shows that it is worth it, but all I see is that it was tested on 1700x (where I wouldnt buy better cpu then 1600) and all the differences (while still insignificant) over 60fps  so not important with 60hz monitors. Personally I think that Ryzen 1600 is the sweet spot and 2666mhz ram is perfect. 3000mhz rams are max I would give money for.

I can get ddr4 3000MHz 16gb for the same price as 2666MHz from what I can find, only a few £ difference

You're in luck then :]

Check if your ram with ram manufacturer's website and mobo's site where you can find QVL lists. If you find the sticks or mobo on those lists you'll know what to expect in terms of mhz compatibility.
