Apple Internal presentation on preventing leaks gets leaked

WMGroomAK

I'm posting this because I honestly find it kind of funny, but it appears that an Internal presentation that Apple gave on preventing leaks of Apple products has been leaked.  According to the reports of this presentation, it talks about your basic workplace security, how Apple goes about investigating product leaks and reasons why your co-workers may want to leak an Apple Product.  Some of the highlights from the article include:

https://theoutline.com/post/1766/leaked-recording-inside-apple-s-global-war-on-leakers

Quote

The presentation starts and ends with videos, spliced with shots of Tim Cook presenting a new product at one of Apple’s keynotes, that stress the primacy of secrecy at Apple. “When I see a leak in the press, for me, it’s gut-wrenching,” an Apple employee says in the first video. “It really makes me sick to my stomach.” Another employee adds, “When you leak this information, you’re letting all of us down. It’s our company, the reputation of the company, the hard work of the different teams that work on this stuff.”

Quote

“This has become a big deal for Tim,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Vice President of iPod, iPhone and iOS product marketing, says in one of the videos. “Matter of fact, it should be important to literally everybody at Apple that we can't tolerate this any longer.” Later, Joswiak adds that “I have faith deep in my soul that if we hire smart people they’re gonna think about this, they’re gonna understand this, and ultimately they’re gonna do the right thing, and that’s to keep their mouth shut.”

Quote

After the first video concludes, Hubbert addresses the room. “So you heard Tim say, ‘We have one more thing.’ So what is that one more thing?” she asks. “Surprise and delight. Surprise and delight when we announce a product to the world that hasn’t leaked. It’s incredibly impactful, in a really positive way. It’s our DNA. It’s our brand. But when leaks get out, that’s even more impactful. It’s a direct hit to all of us.”

“So today we’re going to share with you some of the behind the scenes of leaks that have happened on the supply chain, but also, right here in Cupertino,” she says. “So let’s paint a picture as to this team that Tim said we’d put in place.”

It is definitely interesting to read this and gives an interesting insight on Apple's internal security.  Can't say I blame Apple too much for having strong security to prevent leaks of information, but some of the stuff in this presentation just reads really funny to me.

I'm honestly a bit surprised that Apple hasn't researched how to remotely turn off functions on their own iPhones, like the camera.  So all they'd need to do, is make sure every employee's phone is up to date, and proverbially flip the switch when they enter the Apple building.  Of course, that would assume no one there was running an Android device.

Or something.

But products leaks are what stirs up all the assumptions on forums,  without leaks half the online techzines would have nothing to report and we'd be back to half arsed reviews of ECS graphics cards and nostalgic pieces on EDO ram.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

You say that, but there may be a degree of truth to it.  It's believed that Apple will periodically slip out info to manage expectations for an upcoming event.  Expect devices like X or Y at an event, don't believe the rumours of high prices, that sort of thing.  It's hard to say how much of that still goes on, but it's not all supply chain leaks and enthusiastic employees.

If the article is to be believed, they also embed security staff into product teams in order to help manage secrets...

Quote

Apple embeds members of a team within Global Security, called Secrecy Program Management, on some product teams to help employees keep secrets, he explains. But when sensitive information does get out, Lee Freedman’s investigations team steps in to figure out what happened and who is responsible.

They do, but that doesn't always stop info from getting out.  Mark Gurman at Bloomberg (formerly from 9to5Mac) frequently gets scoops that are clearly from people fairly deep in the organization.
