What are some decent CPU's to buy on Ebay?

If you have a mobo that fits the cpu i would say yes, otherwise first look for a matching motherboard.

The Intel Xeon E5 2660 is half the price for twice the cores!

I'd love having more cores but hows single thread performance compare?

not well.

Max turbo speed of the xeon is 3.0.

Max turbo of the 3770 is 3.9.

Build: Intel S2600gz, 2x E5-2670, EVGA SC 1070, Zotac 1060 6GB mini, 48GB Micron 1333mhz ECC DDR3, 2x Intel DPS-750XB 750 watt PSU

I need a cheap cpu with the fastest single thread I can find. Has to be at least a quad core. So far the 3770 seems to be one of the best deals. I'm just a noob however

An overclocked xeon x3470 on the H55 or P55 chipset will serve you well. They have 4 true cores and 8 threads and both the CPU and motherboard can be found for under $100.

Of course, you know what I always say. check locally first before making a decision.

I'm having a hard time finding single thread scores for it. The 3770k scores about 143 in r15 single (so maybe 130-140 for the 3770). How would the x3470 compare?

the 3770 should be a bit faster than the 2400. It's an I7, and a generation newer at that. $55 is cheap though. Ebay?

Just looked at some benchmarks. How the hell does an OC $15 CPU beat a stock 7700k in multithread?

I've got myself a x5670 (basically the same chip with higher stock speed) and got it to 4.3 without much problem.

Thw x58 motherboards are really expensive though and can be a pain to find in the first place..

I've found several X58 boards on ebay around $99. Are there any ones in particular I should look for or will they all overclock the same? Can it get to 4ghz on air or would I need liquid?

Grab a 2700k and crank it to 4.8-5.0GHz at 1.3Xv.  If you're gaming, you can't beat it for the money.

I considered either a 2600k or 2700k. Haven't found nearly as many 2700k's as 2600k's. Is there much of a difference in OC potential? The problem I see with overclocking is i'll need a $70+ z68 motherboard right? That brings the price up quite a bit. I did find an 1155 mb for $15, but it wasn't a high end chipset

The 2700k is a binned 2600k, so the average overclock was a little better.  That said there are certainly plenty of 4.8-5.0GHz 2600ks out there.

Yeah, you would need a z68 motherboard.  How soon were you looking to make a move?  I will be selling my 2700k and Asus P8Z68 Deluxe board in a few weeks.

I'm looking to upgrade very soon. As soon as I figure things out that it. So hopefully no more than a couple weeks. I'm definitely interested if your selling it soon

You are completely fine on air. I'm at 1.35 volts and sit at high 60s while stressing the CPU.
I'm not sure about the motherboards, if you were to give me an exact model I could give you some more advice :)

I think it is good @DeadlyPilot, you will just need Z87/97 motherboard
