R7 1700 or i7 7800X?

I've spent the past week putting together a new system and figuring out how to finance it, meanwhile Intel have been releasing new processors that I wasn't even aware of because I don't pay attention to the latest releases that much and just go for what's the latest at the time. I can see that the X299 motherboards are slightly pricier but that doesn't bother me, what would be better? I plan on gaming mainly, I'll be using it to stream to Twitch too but I'm hoping to have a two system setup to reduce lag.

 

Can anyone offer me some advice please?

I did just mention that the price difference doesn't bother me, I just want what's best for what I'm doing.

The 1700 is still going to do that for you.

7800X is likely gonna be the better chip - but at a cost - probably $300+ for release boards and $599 for the CPU and then you need (prefer) quad channel ram so another ~$250 

 

so $1100 vs ($200 X370 + $300 CPU and $150 ram ) $650

Still $379 CPU gonna be close to $1k

 

Money aside the 7800X will probs be slightly ahead in games much like the 6900K now probably 7% at a guess. If you are likely to use things that utilise all the cores, the Ryzen will win

Really going to have 2 systems then get neither and get a 7700k. If the chances of two systems aren't that high go with the 1700

i7 7800x is a 6 core processor, more expensive

R7 1700 is an eight core, less expensive

7800x is definitely better but you'll end up paying about $200 more.

You didn't factor in ipc, clock speeds, pcie lanes, overclocking, l2 cache, l1 cache, l3 cache, optimizations, memory channels, memory overclocking, CCX crap, etc.

Yeah just get a 7700k if you are getting a 2 system setup. The reason people have a 2 system setup is to not need a 6 or 8 core processor.

Yeah but we have no idea what would stream better because it could be a tie between the two and then the 1700 would make more sense.

If it means anything, I expect the 7800x to be only 0-5% behind a 1700 in multi threaded performance and 20-25% ahead in single threaded performance.

Tbh I don't think it matters because if they are doing a 2 system setup they should just get a 7700k

Depends on the clock speed TBH, if you get a 7800X and you delid it and OC it to 5GHz, it will probably be able to match a 1700 in multithreaded while destroying it in single threaded applications

My math, based on cinebench (which favors Ryzen too), puts a 4.6 ghz 7800x at 0-5% behind a 3.9 ghz 1700 in multi threaded tasks and 20-25% ahead in single threaded tasks. I think it's safe to say a 5 ghz 7800x would win in multi threaded as well, though I'm still not sure if, even delidded, most 7800xs can hit that high. Most 7900xs seem to be able hit 4.5 so I think most 7800xs could probably hit 4.6

Yeah, most 7900Xs though can't go higher because they are hitting 100C

If best possible gaming is your target get either the 7700k or a high end x chip on x299. Ryzen is awesome but it is not the best for gaming. Maybe zen2 will be next year.

go X299 for gaming then... but you might as well be going for 7700K for gaming... unless you want to duel stream and be like pew-pew-pew-die-pie when you grow up...

That's almost like saying the FX 8350 is better than a i5 4690k cuz it has twice the cores, ya should think about IPC, cache and such.

I saw streaming and threw out cares about IPC, cache and such. Clearly I have made a mistake

From what others have posted the 7800x will be better for gaming and will be sitting around a 1700 level performance for Multi Tasking. The processor and mobo will be an extra $200 it looks like. So. if the price and early adopted issues dont bother you I would say Intel will be your best bet. If you want still solid performance and value then Ryzen is the clear choice.

Only get the 6 or 8 core intel if you are doing a single streaming system otherwise go for the 7700k and another system to run the stream.
