A recent Wikileaks document dump revealed that the CIA has been hacking wireless routers. The documents suggest it has been going on for years and as many as 25 devices from 10 different manufacturers were targeted.

This latest leak included user manuals and installation guides for a number of hacking tools. One of them, dubbed CherryBlossom, let the CIA monitor a target's internet activity, redirect their browser and scan for information.

 

A bit scary... I'll bet my router is on the list as well. They'll probably see gratuitous amounts of porn

 

Anyone have a router on the list? Even if its not on the list, they're probably still getting access to it...

I prefer not having to read a novel as well, but not at the cost of almost a complete lack of detail.

 

If this article were entertainment based I would have no problem, but when discussing things of this magnitude an 150 word article that goes into no detail whatsoever is a joke, especially from a well known tech site.

I left etherape running the other day on 4G. I got a few packets from an IP registered to a state owned enterprise that from appearance has nothing to do with my ISP. With my tin foil hat on I can say they will have in their logs an ip and time that can be cross refernced with ISPs logs to locate me. They are not the only odd packets I get. Snort throws down quite a few warnings every day. As far as monitoring the actual modem goes. It's a pain in the ass. It's not like x86 Linux where you can install tripwire.

 

my paranoia comes from using a Huawei modem. Don't trust them. I want opensource networking not dodgyness.

funny thing is with all this shit, have they caught someone with real bad motive in real time after all these years ?  if the answer is 'No' ,  then this sounds like a political tool to target certain individual of their interests or maybe just outright spy on mediocre things .

We're facing changes to human rights laws in order to give the government more spying powers here in the UK. Even if it's being done at least partially for national security, the issue is that the people making the calls don't understand the implications of the changes they want made.

Haven't heard of cherry blossom before, but It's quite well known that there are many toolkits out there use for cracking wifi and sniffing network traffic.  

 

If you don't think your neighbor is a mastermind hacker or the government is camped outside your house,  I wouldn't sweat it too much.  You're never truly safe, but it's unlikely anyone is interested in breaking into your router.  They'd make a better killing social engineering people's info (and the government has a lot of that already).  The CIA's main link to anyone is the ISP, which you're mainly safe from behind a VPN.  Even then, I think they have better things to do than go on witch hunts.

 

If anyone has info to the contrary though let me know.

Yeah I noticed your PM came out after the London Bridge attack and said she wants to increase internet censorship.  What a load of crap.  Politicians are cowards.  They refuse to fight the real enemy and instead want to go after easy targets like ISPs and big tech companies.

Your neighbor is not the problem, and if the gov't is camped outside your house you are F'ed anyway.

 

The issue is mass surveillance.  It is very deep and goes to the root of human rights and the nature of government.
