Is Windows Defender still advisable?

If not, please offer a better free anti-virus system that is more effective and uses less system resources.

How about Bitdefender Free?

I got tired of Defender's penchant for false positives.

Windows Defender is not bad at all and it's actually better than other third party AVs [check here] but it's not as good as the others especially in blocking ransomware like other security programs [here and here] and it doesn't have good sandboxing when scanning [here].

Tbh, I'm not particularly fan of free third party AVs especially when I was in college back in 2010.

Windows Defender is okay at protection, but at the same time it's probably the least invasive AV. However, I'm beginning to believe AV software really isn't useful in a day where exploiting security holes and social engineering are the common tactics. Especially coupled with cautious internet browsing. I can't remember the last time I actually got a virus.

Thanks for your replies, guys!

I actually just switched to Bitdefender Free recently as I was sick of Defender's false positives and brutally long scan times. Was it a good move?

You may want to add this one for ransomware protection. It works even with other AVs.
