Can I swap my motherboard?

Hey guys,

 

If i have a different motherboard in my system with the original CPU, RAM and HDD, will Windows 7 still work?

It will boot into Windows, but I'm not sure whether you will keep the license.

As long as it has the correct socket for your CPU, and supports the size and speed of the RAM, you are fine.

Both are DDR3 and both are LGA 1155... So it should technically work

Worst case is you'll need to use phone activation to re-activate windows 7. When it asks you how many computers just say 1 and if you're connected to a person just say your motherboard died.

Windows is linked to the hardware used. In my situation, I had to reinstall Windows on my test machine after moving from Ivy Bridge to Lynnfield, and when I entered my key and activated it(same license being used as with the Ivy Bridge system), it worked fine, though you may have a different experience.

If you can get into Windows, you have already passed the test of entering the BIOS

now if you also have the same chipset on the new board (like both mainboards are H61) there should not be a problem.

 

windows 7 activation is easy in my experience - IF it needs to be activated again, just type in your key and it should work.
