Atari has officially announced they're making a new, full-fledged console system.

Last week, Atari quietly released a teaser video for something called an Ataribox, and a new website to go with it. Speculation in our forums has run the gamut from a plug-and-play box to the Atari Jaguar II.

So far, all they've announced is that it's going to be based on PC hardware, which makes it sound similar to both the Xbox and Playstation consoles.  I suppose that could be good for them, as it will make porting to their console relatively trivial, but is there really a market for yet another stripped down PC as console?

Unless it's based on taking an existing OS and reskinning it, and cutting some of the fat, I doubt developers are going to jump on it, leading to not many people buying it, leading to developers still not jumping on it. If it is, Temple Run on the big screen! Or another Steam Box.

No, software caused the Video Game Crash.  The Atari 2600/VCS sold like gang busters,however it attracted every shit garbage developer and Atari had no means to control Atari 2600/VCS development.  So video games were a CRAZE and any company that made breakfast cereal (No, seriously, Quaker Oats was making Atari games.  EVERYONE made Atari games) flooded the market with crap games.  Even Atari was guilty of those by making a rushed, terrible, Pac-Man port and then producing more cartridges than the entire Atari 2600/VCS install base.  (They expected Pac-Man to drive up hardware sales that such a mass production of carts would be justified) and eventually retailers were left with bargain bins filled with bad games that they were trying to liquidate at a loss and the whole thing caved in on itself.

 

And THIS is also partially why Nintendo implemented strict controls over game manufacturing and licensing to ensure they could prevent the situation from repeating itself.

 

A lot of people will likely blame the infamous ET game but that game didn't single highhandedly cause the Video Game Crash by a LONG shot.  The crash was caused by a million tiny cuts.

The only company I'd like to see make a comeback is Sega. The Dreamcast was such a great console followed by mismanagement by Sega.

Well, no, this isn't true at all.  The Dreamcast was managed very well and sold well enough.  ...Buuuuuuuuuuuut, Sega burned a BUNCH of bridges during the Sega Saturn era that it caused huge problems for the Sega Saturn.  When Sega 'surprise launched' the Saturn at E3 1995 after they panicked because Sony announced the upcoming PlayStation would be $100 cheaper than the Saturn, but Sega did NOT have enough units in North America to supply all retailers since it wasn't ACTUALLY supposed to be released until they suddenly changed the plan.  Only four retailers got units, Toys R Us, EB Games, Babbages, and Software, ect, so other retailers like WAL-FREAKEN-MART got left out in the cold.  Years later when Sega came back with their shiny Dreamcast, Wal-Mart and other key retailers were like 'That's cute.  Get the fuck out before we release the hounds." and refused to carry the Dreamcast.

 

There were similar issues with Sega alienating some key developers of sports games during the Saturn era, which is why they opened their own 'Sega Sports' brand to fill in the gaps during he Dreamcast era.

 

Also, which is the most important factor, the Dreamcast didn't play DVDs.  That may not seem like the biggest deal but this was when DVDs started blowing up and the PlayStation II was the CHEAPEST DVD player on the market.  The Matrix on DVD is widely credited as being 'The Killer App' for the first year of Western PS2 sales and the GD-ROM drive in the Dreamcast jus couldn't do that.  (However, the Dreamcast came out a YEAR earlier and a THAT time a DVD-ROM drive likely would have upped unit cost by $100 for he Dreamcast.  Prices came down by the time Sony was doing the PS2 and Sony had deeper pockets as well.)

 

But overall, the Dreamcast was NOT poorly managed by Sega.  It's that Sega built a huge series of roadblocks during the Saturn era.  The Dreamcast came in too late in Sega's history to save them as a hardware company.

In turn, it made developers weary of their platform. Add in the Saturn debacle and that really killed any momentum and trust from developers. And add in that Sega of Japan was in disagreement with Sega of America, they were doomed.

 

It was such a shame because the Dreamcast was such a wonderful console that was short lived. 

 

I would love for Sega to come back with a "Dreamcast II" but under better management. They had so much potential, but they just didn't have the right leadership.

If they can make a unique console like Nintendo. But actually put out games for it that are good. They could be very successful. Give us a Mario type game every year, give us a donkey long type game every year, give us a banjo type game. Nintendo's main problem in my mind and a lot of my friends is they have had so much great games in the past, it's the one time re-skinning a game and putting in a new story could actually work.

I pre-ordered the Deluxe PC version of Sonic Mania.  It even comes with a dummy Genesis cartridge and a Sonic Atop A Sega Genesis statue that goes 'Seeeegaaaa' when you push a button. >_>  ...It's the first time I've ever actually preordered a video game.
