[Guide] Mining Ethereum

the kick in the balls is that you have to d/l the entire block chain, which on rural internet takes like, a week.

Huh? No you don't...

I used Qtminer with a mix of cex.io/ethereumwallet.com as the wallet :P

Downloaded at tops 1MB to mine ETH...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

If you're using geth, then, yes you do. It kinda sucks.

Why would you use geth if you don't have at least 6 GPUs mining 24/7? Literally no point in it.

Sounds like geth shouldn't be used then :P

I mean it mined perfectly fine at 27MH/s with my single 290X and 18MH/s (each) for my quadruple 7950 so...

Because some people want to attempt CPU mining (ew).

:P I really should get a functional AMD card. Hopefully I can find an R9 Nano or RX 570 ITX for a nice price anywhere (I have space constraints of up to and including 170mm).

I was meaning more along the lines of a cold wallet but that's way too much work for a small amount of ETH to be stored, hence the 6 GPU remark.

What? When I used ETHminer (had some stability issues), I was able with my CPU without using geth... :D (had some horrendous hash rate however, something like 0.5MH/s...)

One of my 7950s was actually artifacting but all shares submitted by it were valid so... :P

To be fair, I did buy another "used" 7950 which artifacted (returned it as it was supposed to be "used and working") as well however all of the shares were invalid so...idek?

I'm using Nicehash and mining on my 7870 (I setup a C2D at work so I don't pay electricity! :P )

Getting 175-180 sols/s with 1000Mhz core and 1275Mhz on memory (overclocked).

... can't say no to "free" money! xD

Ok, there's gotta be a better way to do this than storing this giant growing geth folder. It's quickly filling up one of my HDDs and I don't want to uninstall anymore games. Aside from buying another storage drive just for storing this geth folder, what other options are there that will work with this guide and mining with this Claymore's Dual Etherium miner?

Played with my OC yesterday and I'm getting 190-200 Sols/s with a 1150 core and 1250 mem OC (stock is 1100 core and 1200 mem, my above post should read 1100Mhz core, not 1000Mhz ;) )

anyone ever get claymore 9.6 to connect to nicehash stratum pool? having a really hard time, keep getting the socket closed by the pool. i donno if it's because nicehash doesn't allow devcredit (which shouldn't be a big deal since you can set -allpool so claymore mines other stratums for credit) or if it's because i've got my bitcoin wallet login stuff incorrect.

any help on that would be appreciated.

Just got my first payment from Nicehash .. almost $17 CAD (bit more than 5 mBTC). Not bad for less than 10 days of mining, on an old HD7870! lol That would be roughly $50+ CAD per month. more than my electricity biil, so not great but not bad!

EDIT : forgot to mention, I'm not paying for electricity, but if I was it would still be profitable (that's what I meant), I'm waiting for my new GTX 970 to arrive and when it does I'll start mining at home since even the HD7870 is profitable!

I now have to optimize the cooling, I'm only using a few 92mm and 80mm fans and the case is pretty toasty (CPU idles at 50c!). I'm thinking of getting rid of both side panels! xD

As terrible as that looks, it should be quite effective.  If function over form is something you pride yourself on, I would definitely give it a shot xD

Just got my second payment from Nicehash ... for a total of $85 (CAD) for just over a month of work (had about 6 days of total down time on the machine for various reasons).

Not bad considering I'm not paying the electricity!! :)

For anyone wondering, yes, I am still planning to add the "how to convert eth -> ___" part of the guide ... eventually.

Alright, I was able to cash out recently so I can tell you about how that works.  Before I begin though, I will reiterate: I assume no liability for anything that you do as a result of this guide.  Proceed at your own risk.

  1. As mentioned in the OP, sign up for https://www.kraken.com/en-us/login
  2. Secure your account (strong password, two factor, etc.) [optional but highly recommended]
  3. Get Tier 3 verification.  This may take a few hours or days on their end depending how busy they are

Now we can move your Ethereum to Kraken.  This is like depositing cash in the bank.

1. Login to Kraken and go Funding > Deposit > ETH and generate an address.  This is where you will send your Ether to to deposit it.

Spoiler

Capture.PNG.051d5109e44605ba64bd36fbcc015627.PNG

Here you can see I already have one but you will need to generate a new one.

2. Open your wallet application and go to the "Send" tab and fill in the following information:

Spoiler

1.PNG.fec808e549d950ad08bc2635f1eda5e1.PNG

1: The address you generated on Kraken.  This is where your ETH will be sent.

2: Check this to send all your ETH

3: Choose your fee.  I just set it to the minimum, it will happen in a few minutes at most

4: Hit Send

3. Wait for the Ether to arrive in your Kraken account.  This may take a few minutes following the successful execution of the transfer by the wallet app since it needs to get "confirmed" by many people.

4. In Kraken, go Trade > New Order and use the drop down to select ETH/CAD or ETH/USD or whatever you are converting to.

Spoiler

2.PNG.0d47e1ceb386e3fcf9a5f89732a4dced.PNG

5. Click "Sell" and enter the amount you are selling.  This will be however much you have, so type it in properly.  Then, either pick "market" to sell almost instantly at whatever the market price is, or type in a number so the trade will execute as soon as it can get that price.  Click the big "sell" button and then wait.

Spoiler

3.PNG.0d548d4105fa2b82152b61ff9232fdf2.PNG

6. Once the trade has completed, you will now have CAD (or whatever) in your account instead of Ethereum.  Go Funding > Withdraw > CAD (or whatever)

7. Click "Add Account" and enter the information for your bank account so Kraken knows where to send the money.  These numbers should be available on a cheque, or perhaps an FAQ sheet from your online banking site.  Save and choose this account, and then enter the amount to withdraw.  This will again be all of it, so enter the correct number.  There will be a fee (amount varies by location and other things).  For me it was $10.  Sad, but what are you gonna do.

Spoiler

4.PNG.27c278b4afbc1aa3f5de47d8ab6d8de6.PNG

8. That's it!  Just wait for the cash to arrive in your bank.  For me it took several days, but it worked perfectly, as expected :)  I sold at a good time (pretty much right at the recent peak) but it has since dropped again.  Perhaps wait for the next spike before doing this yourself, but get ready ahead of time so when it is time to pull the trigger you can do it relatively quickly.  I didn't mine for all that long but in the ~2 months or so I was doing it, I made enough (net) to pay for 3/4 of my GPU, so that was nice :D
