Not that comparisons of voltages between platforms is very relevant, but 4 GHz could probably run sub 1.1v on a Skylake-X chip.  God, they are so horrible and expensive.  :D

Just work your way around the sides and you'll be fine. It doesn't have to slide off in just one direction. Might even help to operate on it while it's slightly warm.

Probably not, but hey, at least each core is stronger so if your software can only take advantage of 2 or 4 cores, it'll still be faster thanks to the stronger cores.

So the 10c/20t scales almost precisely 2.3x that of the 4c/8t 7700k at stock in Cinebench.  About 1.8x in Handbrake. Looks to be about correct.  I want to say it's kind of sad to have been able to predict this stuff, but we know what the Skylake cores can do, so getting the clocks up should scale pretty well across it.

 

I'm still confused about that Hitman score, unless there's a faster way of fetching resources (memory controller redesign?) that Hitman likes better on SK-X than Kaby Lake.

It's not uncommon that it would though. Understand, the cache has been completely restructured. If the applications that are being tested, isn't prepared for that, it could result in exactly this kind of anomaly. We saw the L4 eDRAM cache helping Broadwell CPU's beat Skylake CPU's in certain gaming titles, when evidence of the IPC gains of Skylake would normally suggest otherwise.

 

This is why we still need more information before jumping to broad conclusions. It's hard to say exactly which scenario's these CPU's will be better in until we've ruled out these newer variables. It's also why it's difficult to trust these synthetic benchmarks that may or may not be updated to take advantage of any newer instruction sets/cache values. I know very little about software, so I don't know if they are able to leverage the larger L2 caches or not. Software scalability (if that's even a word) is not a specialty of mine by any means.

 

I am just as excited for new hardware as everyone else, but I make it a conscious decision not to give in to the hype. We need to take our time and wait for more reviews to come in, before we speak in absolutes about the "facts". Either way, I'll always be able to count on @done12many2 to bench for me, since he will undoubtedly own one of these X299 SKU's eventually :P

I am pretty sure that it's the CPU, AFAIK, the max "safe" voltage according to AMD is 1.45V

I'm personally surprised Asus allows >1.45v to be set without some sort of physical lockout. or at the least some sort of visual warning like changing the color of the text to yellow or red

Yeah, I certainly don't expect any games to be optimized to leverage any of the cache changes, and it's going to be at a latency disadvantage with quad channel (which will likely impact it's gaming results as is). If we can see some optimizations from games, along with reviewers that take the time to tinker with ram, it's minimum framerate results will certainly change to reflect that.

 

I know people seem to think I am anti-Intel these days, but that's certainly not the case. I am anti-falling for hype. There is a huge chance that what we are seeing in the reviews, might not even be the pinnacle of what these CPU's can achieve. We may actually see higher results if optimizations do come into play. It's also likely that review samples might also be slightly stronger than what your average consumers are able to get, if binning is involved. Me warning people to be skeptical isn't just because "this may be too good to be true", but also because "it may not be at it's best yet". I'd be interested to hear what some of the more technical reviewers have to say about these CPU's, as it seems to be a pretty big change from Intel's usual release. First we hear about this cache restructure on these specific SKU's, and then we heard about their "infinity fabric-esque" (Intel Mesh) design for future Xeons. Things are certainly changing faster than usual now that competition has returned.

That Hitman result I'm really curious to see if it holds across testing of the 6c & 8c parts. If it does, we might be seeing upcoming hilariousness as Coffee Lake won't have the new cache structure.  We thought buying decisions were confusing recently, there could be a mess about to happen.

You know what would also run cool? Not cutting corners and soldering it like X99 and Ryzen. Its expensive enough to justify some quality.

It has nothing to do with Ryzen, this stuff was designed years ago.  The only thing AMD affected was the launch dates getting pulled in.

 

Intel is currently working on Icelake for example, that's how far in the future things go.

The board partners beg to differ. A few of them have mentioned that the 18c/36t CPU was a surprise to them. I doubt the CPU's themselves were a direct answer to ryzen, their segmentation certainly is. Had AMD not announced threadripper's core count, I highly doubt that 18c/36t CPU would have existed on X299. It would have existed as a locked down Xeon instead, and Intel would have charged an even bigger premium for it. 

 

The same can likely be said of other CPU's in this X299 lineup, but we can't say for certain. The decision to embrace a more unified platform on X299 with it's inclusion of a quad core without HT, and a quad core with HT, also seems similar to Ryzen's unified platform, in that they have a platform that scales from 4c/4t all the way up to 8c/16t and everything in between. EPYC continuing that trend, offering 8c/16t all the way up to 32c/64t. To say "it has nothing to do with Ryzen" seems rather silly, given the circumstances.

I'm referring to comments that act like Intel suddenly designed their mesh interconnect and a HCC Skylake package in response to Ryzen.  For sure we wouldn't have a > 10 core chip if it wasn't for AMD, but it's not like Intel is having to actually scramble making new chips to be competitive.  I'd love to be in a position where my competitor has to spend 5 years to make something and all I need to do is update an Excel spreadsheet to beat it.
