Sort of, Omni-Path is and interconnect used as the bus to intercommunicate between chips, however Skylake is using and updated version called Ultra-Path Interconnect. It also allows connecting to external nodes through 100Gb channels. However this is only on the Xeon chips not the HEDT line.

 

I unfortunately can't go into too much more detail due not everything being released yet.

Well Skylake-X won't use it unless Intel plans on allowing multi socket support and pulling another Skull Trail (which I am honestly not that against). It's just used for inter socket communication between CPUs. It's part of the "mesh" but not used in Skylake-X which that, and the dropping of Hex-channel memory to quad-channel, is probably why they could shrink it to fit on a smaller socket.

36 core desktop would make me happy in the pants....but I seriously doubt Intel wants anyone have that many cores outside Xeon.  But fuuuuuck 36 overclocked cores, be needing to recommend 1600W PSU's up in here.

It's rather amusing because Intel and Gen-z consortium have been working on new interconnect technologies for some time now but AMD announces tech based on it first so gets all the credit 

 

As much as I like what the Infinity Fabric is it's not the complete solution that's being sort after and is only an adaption of ongoing research, so is Intel's but it is much more likely for now that Intel's technology being integrated in to their architecture is going to be better. Not only that but with the Gen-z consortium being an open standards and Intel not being a member of it still means they can leverage anything developed by it, take the best parts etc etc.

It's honestly quite hilarious when they come up with these awesome technologies and then keep it quiet and don't really announce it, then someone comes by with something similar and goes "hey look what I can do!" and they wonder why they get most of the credit. Heck there are cases in this thread of people saying Intel copied AMD when this has been delveloped, expanded upon, and improved since '08.

looks like AMD really knocked it out of the park with scalability and infinity fabric. Let the multi module, multi core, multi socket, multi all the things CPU wars begin.
