X299 vs Ryzen - Time to switch?

So having swapped from Skylake 3 months ago to Ryzen (And minus the motherboard hell we all went through couldn't be happier). That being said the X299 has turned into an absolute sh*t show. The exact same cpu on a more expensive chip set with features being disabled based on hardware choice and virtually viable upgrade path, with almost every CPU having less threads or being 2-3 times more expensive then Ryzen?

Now I am not a fan boy of either, I have said it before and I will say it again, I kneel at the altar of VALUE. I have used intel for almost 6 years, because for an enthusiast builder like me Intel has reigned as the best value/performance against AMD. I made the swap before the X299 launch and the whole thing has re-enforced my decision. I am curious to see how others in our little Linus family feel or what plans people are making?

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

Coffeelake is a valid 3rd option as many Intel users are waiting to see what it provides before doing a Ryzen swap.

I'm not wasting money on either of those platforms, but X399 might get it in the end, however I have dual Xeon systems for many cores or high RAM usage and my i7 7700K does everything else, it will be replaced with Ryzen's successsor almost certainly however, unless Coffee/Cannon Lake is 10nm, 6 cores and 5GHz+ for less than $350.

Yours faithfully

On Intel's side value and performance does not go together. Ryzen for value. Got some of those special programs, where it's picky, Intel.

In the past there are some software that will not work on AMD CPUs, was it designed on purpose, don't know, but it just won't work.

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

Ok so if I had more money than I could possibly need and wanted to get the best of the best just because I can then I would go for x299. Now that not being the case and value actually being a factor in would go for an amd chip. I mean I already got the a r7 1700 because I needed the cores and it's value couldn't be beat for me.

Sometime next year I'll most likely be building a new rig... with RYZEN!

Choosing Ryzen but the system is going to be pretty bare bones(Apart from my experiments with Conductonaught) until Zen 2 or 3 and Navi hit the market.

Thats great, I am curious to the reasons for your pick. Does it have a certain feature set you need or want?

I don't need any cpu upgrade for quite some time. :)

And Coffee Lake to me will be a downgrade not a upgrade

Probably X299, but I am not in a rush, so I will see what Threadripper has to offer before I decide or I may get a Ryzen 7 1700(x) if the 7820X isn't considerably better than Ryzen. ;)

CoffeeLake is mainstream, just like KabyLake running on socket 1151. Being new, it must improve in performance as well as features to be consider as a upgrade, loosing anything compare to your current system then it's a downgrade or sidegrade because you gain something new, while at the same time, lost something you once have.

Intel X99 already has the following

  • Support up to 18 or 22 cores
  • Quad channel DDR4
  • 28 to 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes
  • NVMe Support

Now for coffeelake to be a upgrade it must have better features than X99 and it won't be because

  • max cpu is rumor too be 6 cores
  • Dual channel DDR4
  • 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes
  • NVMe Support
  • Optane Support

I am really interested how the 7800X and 7820X will perform. I want to see what is Intel's response to Ryzen. If Intel just marginally beats out Ryzen, I am still most likely going Ryzen.

Specs: Intel Core i7 2600k | Gigabyte Z68-UD3H-B3 | EVGA 1080 FTW2 Gaming | Kingston HyperX Red 16GB | Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo | Corsair CX600 |
Lian Li Lancool-II white

Laptop: ASUS ROG Zephyrus M15 (Intel i7, 16GB, RTX 2070) | 2013 MacBook Pro 15 (Intel i7, 16GB, GT750M)

Wait till both Threadripper and X299 are released and benches come out then decide whats best for you.  The biggest piece of advice though is don't get a 2000 dollar CPU if you really don't need it.  Seriously, even if you are going to do video editing, streaming, and blendr renders a solid 8 or even 6 core will get the job done wonderfully.  It will also give time for issues to be ironed out and BIOS updates to be released as there are bound to be teething issues at first with both platforms.
